George Pickens makes the catch of the year over Joey Porter Jr. at Steelers camp
By Tommy Jaggi
If you were impressed by the one-handed grab George Pickens was able to reel in on the sideline against the Cleveland Browns last year, prepare to be amazed. Somehow, the second-year receiver just one-upped himself. Everyone at Steelers training camp erupted when they saw this happen. And how could you not?
During the first fully-padded practice on Tuesday, the Steelers were running wide receiver versus defensive back drills. George Pickens ran a go route down the left sideline with rookie CB Joey Porter Jr. blanketing him. But as only Pickens does, he came down with the football in the most miraculous way.
A fan from the stands captured one of the greatest catches you will ever see at an NFL training camp. This is going to be all anyone is talking about.
Here's the catch from another angle:
Despite sticky coverage from Joey Porter Jr. Pickens was able to box out, rise up, reach behind him, and reel in the football. At the catch point, it's starting to look like there is nothing that Pickens can do.
This is nothing new either. Since his freshman season at Georgia, Pickens was coming down with remarkable diving catches. This is simply another one to add to the highlight reel. Pickens will win in this area of his game without an issue.
Now just 22 years old ahead his second NFL season, Pickens is looking to take a monumental leap. Recently, he called himself the best receiver in the world, according to Kevin Clark of the Ringer. In terms of potential, he might not be far off.
Where Pickens really needs to hone in on his craft is his ability to create separation in and out of his breaks. If he were to do this, perhaps he wouldn't have to come down with so many otherworldly catches. But we're not complaining.
The Pittsburgh Steelers receiver has been a human highlight reel from day one, and fans are eating it up. He certainly has us excited for what's in store in 2023.
