Marquee matchups Steelers must gameplan for in Broncos Country
The Steelers will face the Denver Broncos this Sunday at Mile High Stadium. Despite a disappointing offensive performance, the Steelers seem poised to make a breakthrough against Denver.
The defense is primed for a solid showing as they take on rookie quarterback, Bo Nix. According to NBC Sports Pro Football Talk, Mike Tomlin has an impressive 24-6 record against rookie QBs in his career. Despite past challenges with the thin Denver air, the 2024 team is unquestionably stacked for success.
Pickens takes on switchblade cornerback
The Steelers' offense sets the stage for an epic duel between George Pickens and well-rounded cornerback Pat Surtain II. Surtain II is known for his lightning-quick ball retrieval and knack for outwitting opposing quarterbacks. Their collegiate encounter adds an extra layer of anticipation to this high-stakes showdown.
Pickens faces a major challenge in using his physicality to outmatch the swift and versatile Surtain II. Additionally, the Bronco’s CB is always eager to take on the top player on opposing teams. Just last week, Surtain II held the imposing Seahawks DK Metcalf to 29 yards on 3 receptions.
Ogunjobi clashes with longtime left tackle
If healthy enough to play, veteran left tackle Garett Bolles faces the task of protecting rookie QB Bo Nix against edge rusher Larry Ogunjobi. Ogunjobi was praised for his relentless nature and disruptive power by teammate Cameron Heyward and Head Coach Mike Tomlin, the question remains whether the edge rusher can maintain this level of performance for weeks to come.
If Bolles is unable to suit up though, Ogunjobi would presumably have the upper hand against backup Matt Peart.
Battle of the Head Coaches
A battle of masterminds will take place as Head Coach Mike Tomlin faces off against Head Coach Sean Payton on the sidelines. Despite their mutual respect, a fierce competitive spirit drives them. Both veteran coaches have weathered intense scrutiny in the past. With new quarterbacks at the helm of their respective franchises, their play-calling is under even more scrutiny.
Mike 'T' has to be prepared for Sean Payton to pull out all the stops with rookie QB Bo Nix. Buckle up Steelers nation, it will be a chess match with the words checkmate determining one team’s fate in Week 2.
Joey Porter Jr. and the top Broncos receiver
Joey Porter Jr. is gearing up for a marquee matchup against Broncos superstar Wide Receiver Courtland Sutton. JPJ impressively limited Drake London’s impact in the game last weekend against the Falcons and didn’t shy away from expressing his satisfaction about it.
This weekend, the second-year defensive standout will have his hands full with talented route-runner Courtland Sutton. Though Josh Reynolds outgained Sutton last weekend, it’s anticipated that Sutton will continue to be the primary target for Nix.
Bo Nix collides with the Steelers D-line
When Bo Nix takes on the Steelers defensive line, it will be a formidable matchup for the Steel side. However, Nix did showcase that he can use his legs if needed, accruing 35 rushing yards and a TD against the Seahawks last weekend.
But facing T.J. Watt or Alex Highsmith coming at him full speed has to be intimidating. Perhaps a “Welcome to the NFL, rookie” will be on full display Sunday afternoon at Mile High.
