Following the Pittsburgh Steelers' 18-10 road win over the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1, head coach Mike Tomlin delivered a post-game press conference that centered on one theme: appreciation. The Steelers, led by backup quarterback Justin Fields, ground out a gritty win, and Tomlin made it clear he was thankful for the efforts of his team, particularly the calm, efficient play of Fields.

Tomlin opened the press conference by acknowledging Fields’ mistake-free performance, noting the backup’s importance in keeping the offense steady. Fields threw for 156 yards on 17 completions while also contributing 57 rushing yards on the ground. His ability to manage the game and avoid turnovers was crucial in a tightly contested battle. Tomlin expressed his appreciation for Fields’ poise.

“I’m really appreciative of his efforts and his play, certainly. I’m glad we have two capable quarterbacks, as we mentioned before," Tomlin explained. " a real steady Eddie, real steady demeanor. It’s good to be able to communicate with a guy when things get thick. He’s solid as a rock, our play is reflective of that.”

Fields' ability to lead the offense, even as a backup, wasn’t the only thing Tomlin praised. He was equally grateful for the outstanding performance of his defense, led by star edge rusher T.J. Watt. The Steelers' defense set the tone, hitting Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins seven times and recording two sacks.

Watt's relentless pressure and leadership on the field were factors in disrupting Atlanta's offense, and Tomlin made sure to acknowledge those efforts. Tomlin also mentioned Chris Boswell's role in the 18-10 win. The veteran scored all of Pittsburgh's points and punted the ball in the clutch when Cameron Johnston left the game.

"We appreciate it, we don't take it for granted," Tomlin announced.

Steelers defense earns Mike Tomlin's gratitude

Tomlin, alongside defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, devised a specific game plan to neutralize Cousins, who is known for being particularly effective against blitzes.

"Cousins is very good versus blitz. We had to create pressure in a non-blitz structure. We know that about him. He’s great against five or more rushers. We needed to do it with a four-man rush," Tomlin explained.

This approach worked to perfection, with the Steelers front four consistently collapsing the pocket and forcing Cousins into hurried throws.

Tomlin concluded the press conference with a message that’s become synonymous with Steelers football: living up to the standard. His goal is to always meet the standard. Tomlin admitted the team has work to do.

Tomlin's appreciation for the efforts of Fields, Watt, and the entire defense reflected the team’s gritty identity in what could be a sign of things to come this season.
