Mike Webster is a Steelers legend who decided to finish his career elsewhere

Many now know the sad story of Mike Webster long after his playing days were over, but many forget how dominant he was as a starting center in the NFL. The Steelers took him in the fifth round of their historically loaded 1974 NFL Draft class. He would go on to have a long 17-year career in the league and produce a Hall of Fame level.

Webster was a keystone piece for the Steelers offensive line during their dominant dynasty during the 70s. He was a leader and a well-respected teammate. He played for Pittsburgh from 1974 through the 1988 season. That was 14 years of football that settled a center in the trenches that was the best the franchise has ever seen.

By the time the 1989 season rolled around, the black and gold seemed content with moving into a younger direction. Webster was a free agent and allowed to sign anywhere in the NFL. He would sign with the Kansas City Chiefs. They envisioned him as an offensive line coach when they brought him in, but he became their starting center.

He would start there for a season and a half before he officially announced his retirement from playing football. Webster was not the same type of player by the time he got to the Chiefs, but his legendary name was noticeable on for that franchise. It's hard to see him in anything other than a Steelers uniform, but he did suit up in red for Kansas City before retiring.
