Pittsburgh Steelers biggest remaining needs after free agency
By Tommy Jaggi
Now that the bulk of free agency is in the rearview mirror, NFL analysts are busy handing out grades for each team. The Pittsburgh Steelers did a lot more during the month of April than what most fans were probably expecting, as Omar Khan cut players and restructured contracts to maximize the potential of this team during the 2023 offseason.
Now that players like Patrick Peterson, Isaac Seumalo, Cole Holcomb, Nate Herbig, and Elandon Roberts have been added to multi-year deals in free agency, we take a look at Pittsburgh's biggest remaining needs in preparation for the 2023 NFL Draft.
7. Steelers need edge defender depth
With T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith both under contract, it's hard to argue that this is a huge need for the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, that could change in a hurry. Next year, Highsmith will be an unrestricted free agent that this team may not be able to afford.
Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan could be looking at that as next year's problem, but we also saw what this team looked like when Watt went down for half a season. The disgusting lack of depth on the edge is clearly an issue, and the Steelers need a player much better than Malik Reed was last year in the rotational role.
Even if Khan signs a player like Bud Dupree, this is a position they could look to draft at some point on day two or three, as their draft choice would still stand a great chance to make the roster. This is a terrific and deep class for edge rushers, and Pittsburgh may want to consider a proactive approach.
