5 Steelers who need to step up in Week 2
By Ryan Heckman
The way the Pittsburgh Steelers came out in Week 1 against a tough opponent could end up setting the tone for this season. However, we're hoping the team takes the opposite approach.
Maybe, it was a wake-up call. The offseason and preseason hype didn't equal to performance on the field. There were mistakes made all over the place and by many Steelers players.
But five or six, in particular, need to play a whole lot better in Week 2 against the Cleveland Browns. It will be a gritty, divisional battle against a surprising Browns team this weekend, and these guys have to pave the way.
1. Levi Wallace, CB
Let me first say that the Steelers defense was not good, all around. Their secondary was flat-out awful, as a whole. Brock Purdy only threw for 220 yards, but the Steelers made those yards look like they were easily taken by the 49ers.
But, the one player we briefly touched on in a previous piece, Levi Wallace, was quite possibly the worst player on the field for Pittsburgh. His coverage -- or lack thereof -- on Brandon Aiyuk was abysmal, giving up reception after reception. Aiyuk had one of the best games of his career, going for 129 yards on eight receptions and two touchdowns (Wallace was not responsible for those scores, but we'll get to that later).
According to Pro Football Focus, Wallace gave up a 100 percent completion rate when targeted and allowed an opposing quarterback rating of 114.0. It's safe to say that even a small improvement would be a noticeable improvement from Wallace against the Browns next week.
