The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the winningest teams in NFL history. When it comes to Super Bowl wins, nobody has more (though the New England Patriots are now tied). The combination of generational coaches Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher, and Mike Tomlin have combined for 6 Super Bowl victories and 8 appearances.

The Steelers have arguably been the NFL's most successful team since the merger when you combine their regular-season record with their post-season accolades. Here's a look at Pittsburgh's Super Bowl wins, record, and history.

Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl wins

The Pittsburgh Steelers have won 6 Super Bowls beginning in 1975, with their most recent coming back in 2009. Here's a list of their Super Bowl wins, opponents, and results:

  1. Super Bowl IX (1975): Steelers 16, Vikings 6
  2. Super Bowl X (1976): Steelers 21, Cowboys 17
  3. Super Bowl XIII (1979): Steelers 35, Cowboys 31
  4. Super Bowl XIV (1980): Steelers 31, Rams 19
  5. Super Bowl XL (2006): Steelers 21, Seahawks 10
  6. Super Bowl XLIII (2009): Steelers 27, Cardinals 23

The Steel Curtain dynasty began in the 70s, as Chuck Noll's team took the NFL by storm -- winning four Super Bowls in a six-year span. After a long drought without a Super Bowl win, Bill Cowher earned a Super Bowl victory against the Seahawks at the end of his tenure with the Steelers, and Mike Tomlin earned a Super Bowl win against the Cardinals just three years later.

Their two losses came in 1996 against Dallas in Super Bowl XXX where they fell with a final score of 17 to 27, and in 2011 in Super Bowl XLV where they were defeated by Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers by a score of 25-31.

Super Bowl history

The AFL-NFL merger was announced back in 1966, but the official merger took place before the 1970 season. The Colts, Cowboys, and Dolphins kicked off the Super Bowl era as some of the first-ever champions, but the Steelers dynasty of the '70s quickly followed.

In addition to Pittsburgh's 6 Super Bowl wins and 8 total appearances, the Steelers have come close to playing the biggest game on turf on other occasions, and they have a total of 33 playoff appearances to date. It has now been over a decade since their last Super Bowl appearance.
