The NFL preseason is among us. Soon roughly 90 players from the Steelers' summer roster will take the field for Pittsburgh's preseason opener at home against the Houston Texans. Dozens of hopefuls will be out to prove why they belong on the final roster this September.

The first three weeks of training camp were pivotal for players on the roster bubble, and they have been fighting tooth and nail to show the coaching staff why they can help this team succeed in 2024. Unfortunately for these players, the preseason schedule was reduced from four games to three games in 2021.

Players fighting for roster spots will have just three exhibition games to showcase their skills, and with 90 players on the roster, playing time will be limited. Here's a look at the Pittsburgh Steelers' projected depth chart entering the 2024 preseason.

*INJ stands for players who are currently injured or have not practiced due to injuries. No fifth-team players are listed on the depth chart.

Based on player reputations, individual training camp performances, and where players have lined up in the pecking order at camp, this is an early projection of where players fall on Pittsburgh's 2024 depth chart entering the preseason.

There are several factors worth noting. For starters, this is exhibition action, so the starters are not expected to play significant snaps during the preseason. Depending on how long they have been in the league and their reputation, some starters (like T.J. Watt and Cameron Heyward) won't see many preseason snaps, as they don't need to prove themselves.

This means that the second-team and third-team players could see a bulk of the action during the preseason. Mike Tomlin and the coaching staff will be watching to see which players are in line for increased roles in 2024 and who is deserving of their final roster spots.

The coaches will also want to get a good look at the young draft picks on the roster. Starting jobs on the offensive line won't be handed to offensive tackle Troy Fautanu and center Zach Frazier; they are going to have to earn them. This means they should see extended action in the preseason.

Other rookies, like defensive back Ryan Watts and defensive lineman Logan Lee, are not guaranteed spots on the Steelers roster in 2024. They will have to prove they are ready to step in and contribute if they want to avoid the practice squad.

The Steelers' depth chart will change throughout the preseason based on player performances and injuries.
