Ranking the available free agent tight end fits for Steelers in 2023
By Tommy Jaggi
1. Josh Oliver is a prototype 'Y' tight end to pair with Pat Freiermuth
Zach Gentry already has a skill set that complements Freiermuth well at the tight end position. But if Pittsburgh wants the best version of that true 'Y' tight end, look no further than Josh Oliver. The 6'5'', 260-pound tight end dominated as a blocker on the Ravens this past season.
Oliver was able to carve out a sizeable role despite a crowded TE room in Baltimore. He was so good as a blocker that the Ravens rarely took him off the field in running situations. According to Pro Football Focus, Oliver played 440 snaps in line last year and 353 snaps on running plays.
The 2022 season was the first real experience for Oliver as he was used sparingly prior to last year. However, the arrow is sharply pointed up. Oliver is a quality athlete with a big frame and he turns just 26 years old this offseason.
If the Steelers want to let Zach Gentry hit the market and upgrade the TE2 spot with one of the best blocking tight ends in the NFL, Oliver fits the bill. His ability to bulldoze defenders on the ground will help ensure that Pittsburgh's rushing attack will be a strength of their offense.
