Ranking the Steelers best remaining safety options in free agency
By Tommy Jaggi
1. Steelers could target Taylor Rapp
My favorite remaining safety currently on the free agent market has to be Taylor Rapp. I was admittedly skeptical about Rapp coming into the league (and for good reason). After not running at the NFL Combine, Rapp ran a 4.78 in the 40-yard dash on his pro day.
Even with the awful testing speed, Rapp has proven to be a good player for the Rams. He was a starter on a championship defense, and Rapp has earned 6 interceptions to go with a whopping 186 tackles over the past two seasons, according to ESPN stats.
Despite his speed limitations, the Rams played Rapp all over the field, as he earned 524 snaps at free safety and 257 snaps in the box last year. Remarkably he took another step forward and earned the 13th-best overall grade among NFL safeties last season.
The best part is that Rapp turned just 25 years old in December and his best football could still be ahead of him. He may not come as cheap as the other names on this list, but if the Steelers are searching for an upgrade over Edmunds, Taylor Rapp could potentially be that guy.
The Pittsburgh Steelers don't necessarily need to sign a free agent safety, but it would allow them to preserve their top draft capital for other important positions that need to be filled in the 2023 NFL Draft.
