Roman Wilson injury could pave way for Calvin Austin to make a statement at Steelers training camp
By Tommy Jaggi
When the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Roman Wilson in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, he immediately became the favorite to pair with George Pickens at the wide receiver position. The lack of depth on the team had Omar Khan making calls and inquiring about a trade for a wide receiver, and the team can't expect much out of a declining veteran like Van Jefferson.
Unfortunately, Wilson sustained an ankle injury during Pittsburgh's first padded practice at Steelers training camp. Early reports suggest that this could sideline him for a minimum of two weeks. The injury is clearly a setback for the rookie, who was having a promising training camp, but some good may come out of this in the end.
Calvin Austin III is one player on the Steelers who has not gotten a fair shake. That could change with Wilson sidelined.
Calvin Austin could get his chance to shine for Steelers
After an outstanding college career at Memphis in which he racked up 156 receptions for 2,541 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns, Austin blew up the 2022 NFL Combine -- running a 4.32 official 40-yard dash and recording a broad jump of 11'3''.
Austin's game-breaking speed was on full display during his first summer with the team until a foot injury claimed his rookie season. In year two, Austin was at the mercy of Matt Canada's play design and Kenny Pickett's target quality. This resulted in just 17 receptions all season.
Now entering year three, the fourth-round pick from the 2022 NFL Draft could see even more usage with Wilson watching in street clothes. Early at Steelers training camp, Austin has been earning snaps with the first-team offense and his speed and ability down the field has flashed. Before Wilson's injury, the talented rookie was splitting these first-team reps with Austin and Van Jefferson.
Though Austin will always be at a disadvantage when it comes to size (5'7 3/4'', 170 pounds), he's a talented player and elite athlete with an impressive college resume. Because of this, he deserves a legitimate shot to prove what he can do before taking a backseat as a backup receiver and punt return specialist.
These opportunities could come his way in the preseason, as Austin is expected to take the field with the first-team offense. Based on where Wilson is in his development when he returns to the field, this could carry over into the regular season as well.
Austin simply needs a shot. He's either going to prove that he's an explosive player who the Steelers need to feed on offense (a la Tank Dell of the Texans) or he shows the team that he's not that guy.
Either way, Roman Wilson's injury could be the opportunity Calvin Austin needs to make a statement at Steelers camp and, hopefully, the Steelers' 2024 season.
