As players showed up to Steelers training camp today, all eyes were on their incoming starter at the quarterback position.

Russell Wilson signed with Pittsburgh this past free agency after being let go by the Denver Broncos. Despite competition from Justin Fields, everyone believes Wilson will be the starter in week one. It has been a group effort, but Wilson and company have held private workouts with fellow teammates during their time away from the team.

Those drills have given Wilson a chance to work with some of the targets that he will be working with this season. He spoke to the media today and spoke highly of his teammates, but he remains giddy about the speed Calvin Austin III brings with his game. It continues to lead a hype train around Austin after a quality offseason.

Wilson has not been afraid to sing the praises of his potential new favorite target. Some were captured by Dejan Kovacevic of DK Pittsburgh Sports.

"We got a lot of playmakers," Wilson stated after being asked about his receiving group.

The Steelers new quarterback spoke highly about his receiving core, but Austin seems to be one of his favorites.

"I think Calvin Austin has been amazing all offseason. Just watching his speed and his ability to get in and out of routes."

This isn't the first time the Steelers QB spoke highly of Austin

Other than his comments going into training camp, Wilson has been complimentary about Austin throughout the offseason process. Speed kills in the NFL, and this small receiver has plenty of that to burn. It has led to plenty of compliments and support for Austin heading into training camp. Wilson even compared Austin to Tyler Lockett.

Lockett played with Wilson for many years, and they produced one of the most lethal connections in the NFL during their time in Seattle.

That is some high praise to speak, and many believe that Austin should be able to take another step in his game heading into this season. His blend of speed and elusiveness will put him in great situations. Adding Wilson's arm strength should only allow Austin to get more deep balls for him to run under.

Austin was the fourth-round pick of the Steelers back in the 2022 NFL Draft.

He missed his entire rookie campaign after he sustained an injury early in training camp. Last season held high expectations, but Austin didn't get many chances to show off his speed. Perhaps it was a bad fit in that offense, or maybe the quarterbacks couldn't stretch the field as much as Fields or Wilson. Either way, this is a big training camp and season ahead for Austin.

He can either just be a depth guy in the NFL who can provide special team snaps, or he could take a jump forward and solve the Steeler's issue at their receiver position.
