Steelers 2024 Mock Offseason: Pittsburgh goes outside the box and guns for big names
Steelers mock draft round 4: Jordan Travis, QB, Florida State
Injuries play a major part in a prospect's potential outcome of their draft stories. If someone gets injured early into their final season in college, it could sink their odds of being drafted high. But if they can stay relatively healthy for most of the schedule and get injured late, they may remain high on draft boards.
It is somewhat concerning that Pittsburgh has not been publicly meeting with a ton of quarterback prospects. The fact of the matter is that this club will have to take a quarterback at some point in the upcoming draft. It will be Pickett and Wilson fighting for the starting job. Wilson will get every opportunity to start over Pickett in this scenario.
Taking someone like Jordan Travis with their second fourth-round selection would be a great gamble here. He is a quarterback who was deemed one of the better in this class, which is highly regarded by many evaluators. His season-ending injury not only sunk his draft stock, but it kept the undefeated Florida State Seminoles out of the college playoffs.
Travis is a smart player who can read the field well. He will be 24 years old, so his ceiling is mostly tapped out. He provides mobility to an offense and should develop into a quality backup. He could sit behind Wilson for a year or two and eventually take the starting spot. Travis is a good gamble here with the quality of play he showed before his injury this past season.
