Steelers 2024 Mock Offseason: Pittsburgh goes outside the box and guns for big names
Steelers mock draft round 2: T'Vondre Sweat, DT, Texas
Getting younger in the trenches is something the Steelers need to accomplish this offseason. They need to find an impact player or two who can remain a starter in the interior of their defensive line well into the future. Cam Heyward seems to be entering his final year in the NFL, while Larry Ogunjobi has been a disappointment since signing his contract extension.
Pittsburgh keeps that in the back of their minds as they enter day two of the draft. They end up selecting T'Vondre Sweat out of Texas with their second pick in the draft. This would be a nice get but would receive mixed reviews from some. People either love this player and expect him to go around this point or dismiss him and expect him to go much later.
He had a strong week down at the Senior Bowl and has to keep his strong start to the pre-draft process moving. The Steelers will show interest in him and his fellow teammates coming out of the draft, Byron Murphy II. Both should be top picks by teams in the coming draft after they prove that they can be a dominant duo in college.
Sweat is someone who can fill the nose tackle role to start his career. He will be 23 years old when his rookie campaign kicks off. He is someone who should be able to become a strong-run defender. He must work on his pass-rushing skills when he gets to the next level. The Steelers get the young defensive tackle that they were searching for.
