After Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season, the Pittsburgh Steelers have claimed sole possession of first place in the AFC North, thanks to their 18-10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Their win was the only victory by a team in the division, positioning the Steelers ahead of their rivals early in the season. It may seem premature, but success helped Mike Tomlin's team improve. The Steelers celebrated a victory while rivals dealt with opening week frustrations.

The Baltimore Ravens, led by Lamar Jackson, fell short in their season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday Night Football. Despite a strong effort, the Ravens couldn't overcome Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, losing 27-20. Baltimore’s defense struggled to contain the reigning MVP, while the offense failed to muster enough firepower for a comeback. Derrick Henry found the endzone but did not astonish fans in his first appearance with the team.

Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Bengals also faltered in Week 1, suffering a 16-10 loss to the New England Patriots. Joe Burrow and the Bengals offense couldn't find a rhythm against New England’s stout defense, and a few missed opportunities doomed Cincinnati to a disappointing start.

In Ohio, the Cleveland Browns experienced a tough 33-17 defeat at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys. Cleveland’s defense was overwhelmed by the Cowboys' high-octane attack, as Dak Prescott and company piled on the points. The Browns offense, led by Deshaun Watson, struggled to keep pace, leaving the team winless after the first week of play.

THe Pittsburgh Steelers write thier own destiny in the AFC North

In contrast, the Steelers stood out for their defensive performance, allowing the fewest points among the AFC North teams in Week 1. The defense forced three turnovers and shut down Atlanta’s run game. Pressuring Kirk Cousins became the winning formula.

The veteran was hit seven times and sacked twice. Disrupting timing was crucial in sealing the victory. Holding the Falcons to just ten points showcased Pittsburgh’s ability to limit opposing offenses, which will be essential as they prepare for Week 2.

Looking ahead, the Steelers will face rookie quarterback Bo Nix and the winless Denver Broncos. After a lackluster Week 1 performance, Denver will be eager to bounce back, but Pittsburgh’s defense should present significant challenges for the rookie signal-caller.

The matchups across the field weigh in Teryl Austin's favor. Courtland Sutton will face off against sophomore cornerback Joey Porter Jr. T.J Watt will continue to add to his impressive stat line - all while Justin Fields secures his role as QB1.

A win in Week 2 extends the Pittsburgh Steelers' streak. It will also give them an early AFC victory. Conference wins are critical factors in playoff tiebreakers and future standings.

By maintaining their defensive strength and building on their offensive momentum, the Steelers have a prime opportunity to solidify their position atop the division and set the tone for the rest of the 2024 season.
