Steelers CB give fans an epic feel-good moment with huge interception vs. Broncos
By Tommy Jaggi
We love seeing success stories in the NFL. They're even sweeter when they come from a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Omar Khan and Pittsburgh's front office took a stab at a talented but injury-prone cornerback in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Cory Trice Jr. had multiple ACL injuries in the past. Unfortunately, he suffered another early in his first training camp last summer.
As a late-round draft choice, the chances of Trice revitalizing his NFL career looked bleak. Fortunately, the talented cornerback was able to make a full recovery.
The Purdue product had a fantastic preseason with the Steelers in 2024, and fans were hopeful for what he could offer the team this year. It didn't take long for him to make his presence felt. In his second NFL contest, Trice made the defensive play of the game against the Denver Broncos.
After a trick play from the Broncos' offense backed Pittsburgh's defense up against their own end zone, Trice picked the ball off in the end zone to save seven points.
This was the first interception of Trice's NFL career, but fans are hoping it's far from his last.
Cory Trice Jr. has untapped upside with Steelers
Trice earned five interceptions in his college career, but he's not necessarily known for his ball-hawking ability, At 6'3'' and over 200 pounds with long arms, Trice has an incredible frame to go with amazing athletic traits. This led to Mike Tomlin labeling Trice as one of Pittsburgh's 'avatar' cornerbacks (Joey Porter Jr. being the other).
Fans were concerned with Pittsburgh's cornerback depth heading into the 2024 season, but Cory Trice Jr. will help put these concerns to rest if he keeps playing like this. Much like 2024 third-round pick Payton Wilson, Trice would have been a much higher draft choice if not for his extensive injury history.
If he can stay on the field, Trice could be an incredible asset to the Steelers moving forward. Fans should be excited about everything he has shown so far... and it's only been two games.
