We now enter the second week of Free Agency around the NFL. Pittsburgh has been very active in free agency and on the trade market. They have filled several glaring holes on the roster, but the Steelers still have plenty of voids across their current team. They have a lot of time left to fix those issues both in free agency and the draft.
Time is currently on their side, but it could start to dwindle if they don't hurry up. They have been active, but expect them to remain that way. Omar Khan is not afraid to be aggressive and it seems like the Steelers could still bolster Pittsburgh's roster before the club turns its attention towards the draft.
Expect more moves to be announced in the coming weeks. Here are some free agent moves Khan could pull off before the dust settles.
Steelers could land a starting WR in free agency
Wide receiver remains a big issue for the Steelers even though they just signed Van Jefferson. He will be best suited as a depth piece for a quality offense, as he provides size and some position flexibility. They need a starting receiver in free agency to take some pressure off the draft. Tyler Boyd makes sense, but so does Mike Williams.
He was just cut by the LA Chargers last week and will be visiting the Panthers, Jets, and Steelers this week. It seems like his meeting with Pittsburgh could be the last on his free agency tour. We will see where this goes, but Williams could be a great option on the outside if he can remain healthy. The black and gold need an outside receiver opposite of George Pickens and either Boyd or Williams would make a lot of sense.
An underrated center could be the mix
We move from one offensive position to another. There is a gaping hole at starting center right now. Nate Herbig cannot be your only option heading into the draft. There are plenty of quality prospects coming out of this draft, but you need more depth there than a rookie and Herbig coming into training camp. Luckily there is an experienced center on the market.
Many will name Connor Williams, but he is still recovering from a season-ending injury. One name that hasn't gotten a lot of attention, but should is Nick Gates. He was the starting center for the Washington Commanders and did a great job in that role. He has also played at guard, so he does provide some position flexibility. He was just cut from Washington, so he shouldn't break the bank.
Steelers could target a veteran cornerback
Pittsburgh connections are real when you look at what Mike Tomlin likes in his players. The club needs more depth in their secondary. They added Donte Jackson to be their outside cornerback opposite of Joey Porter Jr. They still need a starting-caliber slot corner for their defense. They could use some help in that department.
Chandon Sullivan might return, but signing someone like Avonte Maddox might be their best route. He has struggled to stay in games over the years, but when he plays, it is always impactful. He spent his college days at Pitt, so Tomlin would be familiar with him. Maddox is coming off the worst season of his career, but that might be an outlier. If he can stay healthy, then a cheap one-year deal would be a great get for the Steelers.
