Steelers mock draft round 3: DB Anthony Johnson

The Steelers dip into the secondary again in this mock draft, targeting versatile defensive back Anthony Johnson from Iowa St. The team sent the farm to their Pro Day, and Johnson was a name that reportedly stuck out to them. Given their long-term needs at safety and instant needs in the slot, it isn’t hard to see why.

Johnson is a better-than-expected coverage player. He uses his solid athleticism to hang with players man-to-man and can hit hard as a run defender. He anticipates well and attacks the football when allowed to go after it. He struggles when put into a zone, and it is clearly where he is least comfortable.

Johnson could eventually develop into a fine safety prospect for this team. Early on though, he has the makings of a capable slot defender given his physical style and comfort in man coverage. If he can reach his full potential there, the Steelers would once again have a versatile and capable slot defender for all occasions.
