Steelers Mock Draft: Pittsburgh attacks primary needs to jumpstart the offense
As we sit here today, the Steelers still have a handful of pressing issues on their current roster. The good news is they still have time and Omar Khan has stated that the club is not done adding. They will investigate different options to fill those voids through the draft, free agency, and trades if needed. They are flexible and willing to do anything to improve this roster.
Pittsburgh still has some free agents they are likely in the market for right now, so that could always sway their future decisions at the draft. We know they need a starting receiver, center, and hopefully an upgrade at tackle.
The Steelers will also need to add a slot cornerback and potentially an inside linebacker. Here's what I have Pittsburgh doing in my latest seven-round Steelers mock draft.
Steelers mock draft round 1: Adonai Mitchell, WR, Texas
We kick things off with somewhat of a shocker for the Steelers. Both Jackson Powers-Johnson and Graham Barton are still on the board at pick 20. With the history of centers falling in the draft, Pittsburgh decides to go another route. They take Adonai Mitchell out of Texas with their first-round selection in this mock draft.
He has good size and blazing speed at the receiver position. Explosiveness is the name of the game for Mitchell coming out of college. He is a deep threat, which would complement Russell Wilson's deep ball handsomely. Mitchell at pick 20 might seem rich right now without long-standing production in college, but this draft crop of receivers is going to go early and often.
Steelers mock draft round 2: Zach Frazier, C, West Virginia
We go with the obvious choice here as the Steelers will likely go after Zach Frazier in round two if they fail to take a center in round one. Both Graham Barton and Jackson Powers-Johnson will likely go in the first round of the draft, or early on day two in their worst-case scenario. After those two go, Pittsburgh will be biting at the bit to get a center.
Frazier slips to them in this mock draft, but they could trade up out of desperation at center. They could always sit still and choose Sedrick Van Pran-Granger if Frazier goes before their pick. He is a plug-and-play center on day one, but he does have some faults. He needs to work on defending power moves at the next level to become a complete player.
Steelers mock draft round 3: Travis Glover, OT, Georgia State
It has become increasingly obvious that the Steelers have a ton of interest in Travis Glover. The club has shown limited interest in Glover leading up to this point. They had a couple of lesser names at the Georgia State Pro Day, but the Steelers were well represented at the Senior Bowl, which Glover graduated to. They also had him in town for a pre-draft visit. He is a solid tackle option at this point in the mock draft.
He brings position versatility to his game after starting games at both tackle spots and some short-term play at guard. Pittsburgh is taking him here to become their future starter at the right tackle position. Waiting this long to take a tackle means Dan Moore Jr. has a safe job at left tackle for most of this season unless Glover explodes onto the scene.
Steelers mock draft round 3: Mike Sainristil, CB, Michigan
After the Kenny Pickett trade with the Eagles was finalized, the Steelers now have another third-round pick in the upcoming draft. It is one of the final picks in that round, but it provides them another tremendous opportunity to get a quality prospect on their roster. The black and gold wait for their pick to arrive and they take Mike Sainristil out of Michigan.
It was great value and Pittsburgh needs a slot cornerback in the worst way. This mock draft is shaping up nicely for the Steelers after addressing four pressing needs with their first four selections in this simulation. Sainristil will remind many of Mike Hilton. He immediately upgrades their secondary and gives them an extra chess piece on an already talented unit.
Steelers mock draft round 4: Tyler Davis, DT, Clemson
Trying to find an upgrade on the defensive line in the upcoming draft seems like it might not be a possibility. They will struggle to get a top defensive lineman in the early rounds, especially with other pressing needs on the opposite side of the ball. Pittsburgh will likely have to wait until the third day of the draft to seriously consider taking a defensive lineman.
The Steelers take Tyler Davis out of Clemson with their lone fourth-round selection in this mock draft. After signing Dean Lowry, adding Davis only supplies a deeper competition pool this preseason. Davis has a lot of good athletic qualities that will make him attractive. His short arms and inability to stay healthy could limit his NFL career if he can't remain on the field.
Steelers mock draft round 6: Tommy Eichenberg, LB, Ohio State
We reach the sixth round of the NFL draft and the black and gold are shocked that Tommy Eichenberg is still available. They take him with their first sixth-round selection in this mock draft. We know that the Steelers inside linebackers coach, Aaron Curry was present at the Ohio State pro day. Both Eichenberg and Steele Chambers could be options here.
They decide to go with Eichenberg as he produced at a higher pedigree than Chambers did as a starter. He is a linebacker who needs to improve his coverage ability. He has become reliable as a run defender, but he must become more self-aware in coverage to excel at the next level. With other starting options at linebacker, it will take pressure off Eichenberg at the start of his career.
Steelers mock draft round 6: Frank Gore Jr., RB, Southern Mississippi
Everyone should be able to recognize this name as Frank Gore Jr. is the son of former NFL star running back, Frank Gore Sr. We know that Mike Tomlin loves football families, so Gore would make a lot of sense to help fill out their running back room. Production is not the problem with this prospect coming out of college as he produced high numbers.
Gore comes out of a small program in Southern Miss. That has put a knock on his production as a whole. He also needed to show more of an all-around game during his time in college, which he failed to accomplish for the most part. With all of that said Gore would be a great addition as the third running back behind Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren.
