Steelers Mock Draft: Targeting NFL Combine studs and defensive stars
By Andrew Falce
Steelers mock draft round 2 (via CHI): CB Deonte Banks
One of the deepest positions in this upcoming draft class, cornerback figures to be on the Steelers radar at some point. Even though Weidl doesn’t have a long history of targeting defensive backs, the class is deep and the team made rounds at cornerback at the combine. I’m expecting one of the day two picks to go toward a cornerback.
A name that blew up the combine, Deonte Banks figures to see his draft stock improve after his blazing testing numbers. It wasn’t like he didn’t have any hype to his name before. Most saw Banks as a mid-late day two pick given his ability to play outside and serve as a man coverage cornerback. The impressive speed has launched his name into the first round conversation though.
Banks has the athleticism to recover and stay with players in man coverage. He has a lot of inconsistencies in zone coverage and as a run defender. That said, has the potential to be a starting cornerback for a defense that uses man coverage. Banks makes sense for a Steelers defense that needs to get better in the secondary.
