Steelers should be watching Joey Porter

While I’m not a major fan of taking a cornerback in the first round, especially if the team keeps Cameron Sutton, Joey Porter is an obvious name to connect to the team. From his size to his familial connections, Porter makes a lot of sense for the Steelers. I wouldn’t be shocked to hear his name continue to be a popular one for the team.

That said, Porter is a prospect, to me, that needs to prove himself as an athlete. He isn’t the most refined in coverage, and he lacked splash plays in college, but he has the size and tools you want in an elite cornerback. Specifically, Porter has great length and is supposed to be a plus athlete overall.

If he tests as he should, then the team could justify using their top pick on him. There would be some projection as a pro, but he would have the tools to become a dynamic defender if he develops there. This is a deep cornerback class, and Porter has to stand out as a prospect to be worth the top pick for the Steelers.
