Steelers must target these remaining free agents to appease fans

The Steelers should target some of these options who remain in free agency to fill voids left after the NFL Draft.

The NFL Draft just finished up, but it also marks a new part of the offseason right before minicamps start. The Steelers picked seven prospects coming out of the 2024 NFL Draft. They have been getting rave reviews by many different media outlets across the nation. Just because they did well doesn't mean they still don't have question marks on the roster.

Pittsburgh also restructured Alex Highsmith's contract to open more cap space. It would be foolish to make room and not spend that money elsewhere. It seems like either a trade or signing or two in free agency will be coming.

The Steelers still have holes in the secondary and along the defensive line. They could use some proven upgrades before training camp starts.

Patrick Peterson would provide a sense of security to the fans

This one won't go away from the black and gold until either they sign someone else as a starting caliber player or Patrick Peterson signs elsewhere. We know that both Peterson and the Steelers have been vocal about keeping the door open for his potential return after being a cap casualty earlier this offseason. Pittsburgh could have done a better job addressing the slot cornerback job this offseason and either Peterson or Chandon Sullivan could be options at that spot.

Pittsburgh would love to see a local product like Tyler Boyd sign

Some reported early during the free agency process that Tyler Boyd would likely sign with the Steelers. That has since deteriorated and it seemed unlikely. Now after the draft, it is possible again with the Highsmith restructure. Roman Wilson should be a great addition at receiver, but it seems like the team could use another starting-level option at receiver. Boyd can play inside and outside, which the black and gold could use.

Don't forget about that report of Justin Simmons signing with the Steelers

Take things with a grain of salt when you listen to Antonio Brown's report on rumors, but he has been right before. he mentioned a couple of weeks ago that Justin Simmons would be signing with the Steelers. He would provide depth at safety and a starting option. If he can prove to be a reliable option in the slot and at safety, then this would be a slam-dunk signing.

Someone like Calais Campbell could make sense as a rotational player

Logan Lee is a developmental piece who could eventually earn a role on defense. The Steelers need more depth in the trenches on the defensive side of the ball. Maybe someone like Calais Campbell would be a solid option. He is on the downturn of his career, but maybe he can play a big rotational role in the trenches with the Steelers. This all hinges on whether Campbell would like to play this season or retire.

Andoree Jackson would provide versatility and experience at cornerback

Let's throw out another name here as Adoree Jackson remains a free agent. He won't be a great number-one cornerback for an NFL team anymore, but he wouldn't hold that role in Pittsburgh. He has played both outside and inside throughout his career. The Steelers would be wise to bring someone in with that versatility as it brings more depth to the position.
