Since Steelers training camp kicked off last week, there has been no shortage of news to report. Pittsburgh recently wrapped up its first week of unpadded training camp practices and is preparing for collisions when the pads come on this week.
The talk of camp so far has been around Russell Wilson's absence as he works his way back from a calf issue. The latest Steelers news revolves around Pittsburgh's quarterback situation, the new Hall of Honor Class, and Madden 25 player ratings.
NFL Insider: Steelers QB competition is 'more open' than people think
NFL Insider Mike Garafolo of NFL Network recently reported from Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA where he believes the quarterback competition is 'more open' than what people are giving it credit for.
"The longer I talk to people about this one, the more I'm thinking that this one is more open than maybe we're giving it credit... The longer it goes and the more reps that Justin Fields gets, the more that I think this one is actually an open competition. "Mike Garafolo, via NFL Network
Justin Fields worked with the Steelers' first-team offense in Pittsburgh's first four practices while Wilson was sidelined with a calf injury. Garafolo went on to remind folks that when Mike Tomlin says 'pole position', that hardly means Wilson is guaranteed a starting spot on the team.
Garafolo also pointed out the fact that the Steelers gave Wilson a veteran minimum contract during the 2024 offseason, and they don't have much invested in the former Pro Bowl quarterback.
Russell Wilson expected to return to practice
Following Sunday's practice, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed that Russell Wilson is expected to return to the practice field on Tuesday. If Wilson suits up, this will be his first full training camp practice as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
This will also be the team's first fully padded practice. So far, fellow QB Justin Fields has four practices under his belt with the first-team offense. It's unclear if Wilson will be limited upon his return or how Tomlin will distribute reps among his top two quarterbacks at practice.
Steelers 2024 Hall of Honor class
Over the weekend, the Pittsburgh Steelers introduced its 2024 Hall of Honor class. Each year before the start of the season, former players and coaches are recognized for their accomplishments with the team. This year's inductees include defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, outside linebacker Jason Gildon, running back Willie Parker, and nose tackle Casey Hampton.
With four more inductees being enshrined in 2024, this brings the total to 53 former players and coaches in the Steelers' Hall of Honor. Each member inducted has a plaque on display at the Steelers' Hall of Honor museum at Acrisure Stadium.
Madden 25 releases wide receiver and safety ratings
On July 29, EA Sports released its first player ratings for their upcoming Madden 25 video game. Among the ratings released were those at the wide receiver position and the safety position. Steelers fans were disappointed to see Minkah Fitzpatrick ranked four points below Jesse Bates with a 93 overall rating.
The Steelers didn't have a wide receiver crack a top-10 overall rating at the position. Pittsburgh's highest-rated receiver was George Pickens, who will be an 83 overall upon Madden's release.
Madden ratings update after each week, and you can be sure that George Pickens and Minkah Fitzpatrick will be out to show why they deserve to be rated higher. Madden 25 will be released on August 16.
