Things are about to heat up. After a quiet early offseason since the Pittsburgh Steelers played their final game of the 2022 season, we are finally starting to gain some exciting insight that gives us a look into the near future of this team.

This week, the 2023 NFL Combine will be all the buzz, and for good reason. Not long after, free agency will kick off in mid-March. But prior to these big dates, we are already starting to learn some things about Pittsburgh and its new general manager. Here's the latest Steelers news you need to know.

Steelers news

The first NFL Combine weigh-ins and workouts don't start until Thursday, but coaching staffs, front office members, and the media are already on hand in Indianapolis gearing up for the big event. Recently, the Pittsburgh media caught up with Omar Khan where he was bombarded with a number of questions including his new role as GM and the direction of the team.

As you can imagine the roughly twenty-year understudy of Kevin Colbert answered questions much like the former GM did. Khan was certainly careful not to show his hand early when it comes to which positions will target in the NFL Draft. It's also worth noting that Khan admitted that assistant GM Andy Weidl will be responsible for assembling the team's draft board moving forward.

In addition to answering questions about the NFL Draft, Khan briefly spoke about Steelers cornerback Cameron Sutton. He told Brooke Pryor of ESPN that the team has begun contract negotiations with Sutton and that they 'think very highly of Cam.'

Sutton signed a two-year extension worth $9 million with the team during the 2021 offseason. Now he's set to be an unrestricted free agent who could test the waters if he chooses. Apparently, the team is trying to get him locked up with an extension before he has a chance to do so.

NFL News

The NFL Combine is the first big event of the offseason, so all eyes will be on Indy this week. While the hype rises, there is an interesting development out of Seattle. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is not dismissing the possibility of drafting a quarterback in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Here's what he had to say via Eric Edholm of NFL.com.

""The position we're in, we are totally connected to the quarterbacks that are coming out. This is a really huge opportunity for us. It's a rare opportunity.""

Pete Carroll

This is an interesting statement considering the impressive year that Geno Smith just had at quarterback for the Seahawks this season. Selecting a signal-caller still seems unlikely for a team that made the playoffs last year, but Carroll is making it clear that it's on the table.
