Steelers news: Omar Khan earns new nickname, updated depth chart, and more
By Tommy Jaggi
The Pittsburgh Steelers have a new sheriff in town, and his name is Omar Khan. Since the 2023 NFL Draft came to a close, football analysts have been rushing to praise the new Steelers general manager, thanks to a thoroughly impressive draft haul.
As Steelers draft grades are through the roof, Khan has earned a killer new nickname and ESPN has updated Pittsburgh's depth chart. Here's the latest Steelers news.
Steelers news:
Kevin Colbert who? It didn't take long for Omar Khan to leave his mark on the Pittsburgh Steelers. In his first draft, he loaded up on talent and routinely landed some of the best players available when he snatched up prospects like Broderick Jones, Joey Porter Jr., Darnell Washington, Keeanu Benton, Nick Herbig, and Cory Trice.
Remarkably, 6 of the 7 players the Steelers drafted were ranked inside the top 105 on the NFL consensus board (averaging the rankings of Mel Kiper Jr., Todd McShay, Dane Brugler, and others). Even more impressive is that 6 of 7 players were ranked inside the top 80 overall players, according to Pro Football Focus.
This haul has earned Omar Khan the fitting title of 'The Khan Artist', as he essentially stole the talent available to him in each round. Mike Tomlin even referred to him as this in the team's post-draft press conference. This is a nickname that has quickly caught on with Pittsburgh media.
More Steelers news:
In other Steelers news, ESPN has been quick to update NFL depth charts following the 2023 NFL Draft. For Pittsburgh, ESPN has immediately penciled in Broderick Jones as the team's starting left tackle -- pushing Dan Moore Jr. to the bench. Meanwhile, Darnell Washington is listed just behind Pat Freiermuth and ahead of Zach Gentry and Connor Heyward at tight end. Seventh-rounder, Spencer Anderson, is listed as a fourth-string guard at the moment.
Defensively, ESPN slots Joey Porter Jr. in behind Ahkello Witherspoon on the Steelers depth chart, but that may not last long. Surprisingly, they still have Breiden Fehoko listed as the starting nose tackle with second-rounder Keeanu Benton as the primary backup. Nick Herbig is listed as the third-string outside linebacker.
It's important to note that these are just projections from ESPN; not official depth charts from the team. These could certainly get a shakeup throughout training camp and preseason this year.
NFL news:
We saw an influx of NFL Draft grades come in upon the draft's conclusion. Pete Prisco of CBS Sports was quick to hand grades to all 32 NFL teams. Surprisingly, he gave the Pittsburgh Steelers just a 'B+' for their efforts. The Bengals, Cowboys, Lions, and Eagles were the only teams to receive a grade of an 'A', while the 49ers, Vikings, Dolphins, and Chiefs each ranked at the bottom with grades of 'C-'.
