The intensity is about to amp up just ahead of the 2024 free agency period. Since the 2023 season ended, the Pittsburgh Steelers haven't seen much activity outside of releasing a handful of overpriced veterans. Now we are seeing some big moves that could have massive implications on their upcoming season.
One such move surrounds the quarterback position and is already being met with plenty of controversy by the fanbase. With just days until the start of the NFL's legal tampering period, here's the latest Steelers news.
Steelers plan to meet with QB Russell Wilson
According to a recent report from Gerry Dulac of Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pittsburgh Steelers are interested in recently-released veteran quarterback, Russell Wilson. Just days after the Denver Broncos cut ties with their pricey signal-caller, Dulac reports that Pittsburgh is planning to meet with Wilson.
Dulac reports that the interest is mutual from both parties. Wilson is a nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback who was part of a championship squad during his time with the Seahawks, but his short-lived tenure in Denver did not go as planned.
Now Wilson is looking to repair his damaged reputation, and the Pittsburgh Steelers could be a fit. If signed, he would be the presumed starter over Kenny Pickett, though Mike Tomlin would likely leave it up to competition this summer.
Steelers use top 30 visit on center Zach Frazier
It didn't take long for Pittsburgh to start using their top 30 pre-draft visits following the NFL Combine. The Steelers have a visit scheduled with West Virginia center, Zach Frazier, per NFL analyst Ryan Fowler.
Frazier is widely considered to be one of the top center prospects set to enter the 2024 NFL Draft. The West Virginia standout is rehabilitating from a fractured fibula that he suffered back in November, but he will be ready to go this summer for whatever team drafts him.
Frazier is competing with Oregon's Jackson Powers-Johnson to be the top center taken in April's draft. It's clear that the Steelers have a big need here, and it's not surprising to see them schedule a visit with Frazier.
Mitch Trubisky signs with the Bills
The Buffalo Bills weren't about to wait around to find Josh Allen's backup when free agency kicks off. The Bills have reunited with former backup, Mitch Trubisky, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Just weeks after the Steelers released Trubusiky, the veteran quarterback has inked a two-year, $5.25 deal with Buffalo.
Trubisky saw the lowest point of his NFL career in 2023 when asked to step in for an injured Kenny Pickett, and he was ultimately benched for Mason Rudolph. Now Trubisky will look to repair his reputation by rejoining the team he played with briefly in 2021.
