Steelers News: Pittsburgh waives S Trenton Thompson, WR Denzel Mims
By Tommy Jaggi
The Pittsburgh Steelers recently wrapped up mandatory minicamp. Now we are getting set for the longest stretch of the football calendar year without any notable dates. From now until the time Steelers training camp starts on July 25, we can't expect much movement from the front office.
However, as soon as the early-summer festivities ended, Omar Khan and the front office got to work. Here's the latest Steelers news.
Steelers waive WR Denzel Mims
On July 18, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers waived veteran wide receiver, Denzel Mims. This move was confirmed by the team on July 19. Mims was added to the practice squad last October, but never appeared in an NFL game for the Steelers in 2023.
A former second-round pick by the New York Jets in 2020, Mims was a well-known name entering the 2020 NFL Draft. The former Baylor product turned heads at the Senior Bowl and tested as an excellent athlete at 6'3'' and 207 pounds at the NFL Combine.
Despite his physical gifts, Mims couldn't catch on in the NFL. The 26-year-old wide receiver will now be looking for work elsewhere in 2024.
Steelers waive S Trenton Thompson
Waiving Denzel Mims wasn't the only roster decision the Steelers made this week. On July 19, Pittsburgh waived safety Trenton Thompson, per NFL Insider Aaron Wilson. After a brief stint with the Giants in 2022, Thompson caught on with the Steelers in 2023 where he played in 6 games and recorded 22 tackles and 3 passes defended while intercepting one pass.
The Steelers didn't have much young depth at the safety position, and many fans were hoping that Thompson would take the next step in his second season in Pittsburgh in 2024. Instead, the former San Diego State product will look to catch on with another team before NFL training camps begin.
Omar Khan admits disbelief that Steelers landed both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields
In a recent interview with 93.7 The Fan, Omar Khan admitted that he was in disbelief when the Pittsburgh Steelers found a way to secure both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields on their roster for the 2024 season.
"“If you would have told me that we’d be sitting here with Russell Wilson, Justin Fields and Kyle Allen five months ago, I wouldn’t have believed you. We really liked Justin coming out of college. He had an up-and-down situation in Chicago, and the opportunity was there to get him, and I’m excited. He’s really looked awesome. He’s a great individual, too. I didn’t know him personally until he got here. What a special person he is."

Khan's reaction is very similar to that of many Steelers fans. After somehow inking Wilson to a veteran minimum contract, the Steelers were able to obtain Fields from the Chicago Bears at the cost of a future sixth-round draft choice.
Wilson and Fields are two well-known quarterbacks in very different stages of their careers. Wilson is looking to prove that he still has what it takes to lead a team to a deep playoff run, while Fields is chomping at the bit for an opportunity to show that he's a franchise quarterback many NFL Draft analysts believed he would be when he was selected with the 11th overall pick in 2021.
