Before the Pittsburgh Steelers geared up for their first padded practice on July 30, the team was already making a few adjustments to their 90-man summer roster. Omar Khan has made it clear that he and the front office are not content sitting on their heels, and they are taking a proactive approach to the 2024 season.
Steelers training camp has given us a glimpse into how the coaches view the players and where each player falls in the pecking order on the depth chart. After foraging social media and taking notes from training camp, we have some concrete news early this week.
Unfortunately, the biggest news from Steelers training camp is less than desirable.
Roman Wilson carted off during practice
This is not the news anyone wanted to hear today. During Pittsburgh's first padded practice at training camp, Roman Wilson sustained a foot injury on a jet sweep, per Mike DeFabo.
Wilson, Pittsburgh's 2024 third-round pick out of Michigan, appeared to be in line to carve out a big role during his rookie season. Nick Farabaugh of PennLive snapped a picture of a trainer looking at his left foot before being carted off the field.
The severity of the injury is unknown at this time, but it's never good to see a draft pick leave the field the way Wilson did. Two years ago, Calvin Austin III sustained a foot injury during the summer that claimed his rookie season before it started. Let's hope it's nothing serious.
Steelers cut WR Marquez Callaway
Despite their reported interest in adding a starting-caliber wide receiver to pair with George Pickens, the Steelers had a surplus of players at the position who were each jousting for reps. Pittsburgh thinned out the group this week when the team reported that they had cut veteran WR Marquez Callaway.
Callaway was best known for his impressive 2021 season as a member of the New Orleans Saints in which he raked in 698 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns on 15.2 yards per catch (8.3 yards per target). Some in Steelers media circles believed that the veteran would have a solid chance to make the roster and carve out a rotational role in 2024. That won't be the case, and Callaway will hope to land on another training camp roster.
Steelers cut CB Josiah Scott
On July 29, we heard that the Steelers would be cutting Josiah Scott. This move was made official with the decision to cut Marquez Callaway on Tuesday, July 30. Scott, a fourth-round pick of the Jaguars in 2020, spent the past three seasons on the Eagles -- earning two interceptions and eight pass defenses in 2022.
Scott was a favorite to earn slot cornerback duties for Pittsburgh during the Steelers' summer workouts, but it was clear early in training camp that he was running behind undrafted rookie free agent, Beanie Bishop Jr.
Steelers sign TE Matt Sokol
Pittsburgh used one of their two available roster spots to sign journeyman tight end, Matt Sokol. Sokol, an undrafted free agent out of Michigan State in 2019 bounced around on the Chargers, Lions, Jaguars, and Patriots. Now he will look to stick around on the Steelers.
At 6'5'' and 258 pounds, Sokol has good size but has never been much of a receiving threat, dating back to his college days. He has an impossible journey to the 53-man roster, but with a strong performance at training camp, landing with the practice squad isn't out of the question. We will offer depth to the Steelers at the tight end position this summer.
Steelers sign DB Kyler McMichael
The Steelers essentially swapped one defensive back for another. Out of the mix is Josiah Scott and Kyler McMichael has been added to the 90-man roster. McMichael played his college ball for Clemson in 2018 before transferring to North Carolina.
The defensive back was originally signed by the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent following the 2022 NFL Draft. In his first two seasons in the league, McMichael has not seen the field for an NFL snap.
