Steelers News: Russell Wilson setback, Darnell Washington misses practice, & more
By Tommy Jaggi
The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for their season opener against the Falcons. When they take the field for their first regular-season game in Atlanta, all eyes will be on the quarterback position, both teams will have new signal-callers at the helm in 2024.
Pittsburgh's injury report has been a rollercoaster ride this week, with some names popping up with ailments and others being cleared for action. As we prepare for an exciting Week 1 of the NFL season, the latest Steelers news revolves around the health of their players.
Russell Wilson dealing dealing with calf tightness
The biggest storyline late this week is that Russell Wilson is dealing with what Mike Tomlin describes at 'calf tightness'. Wilson was not on Wednesday's injury report but popped up on Thursday and was a limited participant.
After the news broke, former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel speculated that the Steelers would be cautious with Wilson after seeing what happened to Aaron Rodgers during the 2023. Rodgers ended up rupturing his Achilles after dealing with calf tightness during the summer.
Tomlin hasn't gone as far as to say that Wilson won't be the starting quarterback for Pittsburgh this week, but his sudden appearance on the injury report late in the week is concerning.
Darnell Washington misses practice with knee injury
The Steelers had a tight end show up on their injury report on Thursday. Darnell Washington is dealing with a knee issue that held him out of practice. The big tight end is coming off an impressive 2024 preseason, as he showcased excellent blocking and the ability to get to the second level in the running game.
Washington is expected to be Pittsburgh's 'Y' tight end who's called upon often in Arthur Smith's offense. If he can't go this week, it will be a big loss for Pittsburgh in the running game.
Troy Fautanu ready for Steelers season opener vs. Falcons
Now all injury-related news is bad ahead of the Steelers' Week 1 game against the Falcons. Rookie offensive tackle Troy Fautanu was back to being a full participant in Thursday's practice and is on track to play in the season opener, though it looks like Broderick Jones may get the start at right tackle to begin the season.
Along with Fautanu, running back Jaylen Warren and cornerback Cory Trice Jr. each returned to the practice field as full participants, while rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson is still limited. Sixth-round rookie Logan Lee has also missed practice all week as he deals with a calf injury.
