Pittsburgh's practice squad is starting to take shape. They can tinker with their practice group as much as they'd like, but surely the Steelers would like to keep somewhat of an even group. 11 out of the 16 spots have been announced or reported by the media. It is a group full of talented players who are either young and have something left to prove, or veteran guys down on their luck.
Expect more moves to the practice squad to come as the regular season gets closer. The Steelers will want to have a full 16-player squad ironed out before their Week 1 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.
Even though these players might not have made the team, they will provide significant depth to their respective positions and could gain a roster spot later in the year.
Steelers infused youth and experience on their intitial practice squad
Boston Scott (RB)
Pittsburgh reportedly added Boston Scott to their practice squad just a day after he was released by the LA Rams. Scott provides an abundance of experience throughout his NFL career. He has shown to be a quality overall back with the ability to help on special teams. The Steelers added another quality veteran to fill out their running back group.
Jonathan Ward (RB)
After missing most of training camp with an injury, Jonathan Ward was able to ride his early success to remain in Pittsburgh. He might have missed the roster, but he will be a quality asset for the Steelers on their practice squad. Ward is a former undrafted free agent coming out of the 2020 NFL draft, but he has some experience that should benefit him going forward.
Brandon Johnson (WR)
You can feel the Russell Wilson and Zach Azzanni effect here with the addition of Brandon Johnson. He spent time with both of them in Denver. Fans are still hoping the Steelers will somehow find an upgrade or two at receiver. Johnson is a nice practice squad guy with prior NFL production, which includes four touchdowns last season on only 30 targets.
Doug Nester (OL)
Beanie Bishop and Zach Frazier are together with their former West Virginia teammate again after Doug Nester signed on the Steelers practice squad. He has a ton of versatility entering the league after being an undrafted free agent in 2024. He has started at both right tackle and right guard during his time in college. Nester is a quality depth option to have on the practice roster.
Anthony Averett (CB)
Pittsburgh brings back Anthony Averett as he provides inside and outside flexibility at the cornerback position. On top of that, he has significant experience in the NFL despite fighting from a tryout to making the practice squad with the Steelers this year. He is a nice veteran piece to keep around even though an injury in Week 2 of the preseason derailed his chances of making the 53-man roster.
Zyon Gilbert (CB)
Plenty of depth at defensive back on the practice squad for the Steelers. They signed Zyon Gilbert to their practice squad after bringing him onto the roster late in training camp. He was an undrafted free agent coming out of the 2022 NFL Draft. He has bounced around the league since his rookie year, but he did have a solid performance during the two weeks before getting cut.
Thomas Graham (CB)
Many thought that Thomas Graham was pushing Beanie Bishop for the starting slot cornerback role at the tail end of the preseason. He started gaining plenty of snaps and is someone who could eventually gain a helmet on gameday if Bishop slows down. He has found ways to stick on NFL rosters in the past as a depth piece.
Marcus Haynes (LB)
Plenty of late additions to the Steelers roster during the preseason process made the practice squad. Marcus Haynes is one of those late adds. He was signed on August 20th. Haynes might not have had the best game in the final contest of the preseason, but his effort was off the charts. He seemed to always be around the ball and ran down the field to catch people when needed.
Jacob Slade (DT)
Since the Steelers went with eight defensive linemen on their 53-man roster, there were few choices to add to the practice squad. If Pittsburgh changes their roster at all, one would have to imagine that Logan Lee or one of the defensive linemen will be the odd man out. Jacob Slade showed some good things during the preseason, but there could be better options out there.
Jack Colletto (FB)
Some speculated that Jack Colletto was on the right track to make the roster during the early goings on training camp. Things started to fall off for him, especially once the games started to be played. He did show some quality snaps on special teams, but he needed to show more than that. Colletto could be a guy who gets elevated to the active roster on gameday if injuries start to mount.
Rodney Williams (TE)
Not the best camp for Rodney Williams. He suffered an injury early at training camp and that problem persisted throughout. It caused him to miss a ton of time, and MyCole Pruitt took advantage of his opportunity. Williams is no stranger to the Steelers practice squad, and he could be another option to make it on the roster if other players at the position go down with injury.
Devin Harper (LB)
Pittsburgh added Devin Harper to their new batch of practice squad signings that they announced on August 30th. Harper is a former sixth-round pick during the 2022 NFL Draft. He made the Cowboys roster during his first two years in the NFL and spent last season on Cincinnati's active roster. He is a depth linebacker, but hopefully, they don't have as many issues at the position as they did last year.
John Leglue (OL)
A familiar face comes back to Pittsburgh as John Leglue started a handful of games for the Steelers. He went to Atlanta and played under then Head coach Arthur Smith. The reunion made a ton of sense as Leglue provides starting experience and is someone the Steelers and Smith know well. Nice versatile option to have on the practice squad.
Adetokunbo Ogundeji (LB)
Another former Atlanta Falcon joins the Steelers practice squad here. Adetokunbo Ogundeji is a linebacker and a former fifth-round pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. He has a ton of starting experience but is coming off of a season-ending injury last year. Ogundeji is a low-risk option that will provide youth and experience on the practice squad.
Ben Skowronek (WR)
Pittsburgh added a big target to their practice squad by signing Ben Skowronek. He has also lined up at fullback during his career and has been used as a receiver and runner during that time. He is a former seventh-round pick and someone who could play on special teams. He will provide versatility somewhat similar to Connor Heyward in some regards.
