After Week 1, Mike Tomlin's choice at quarterback should be easy.

Should the Pittsburgh Steelers seriously consider making Justin Fields the starting quarterback for the foreseeable future? After securing a solid 18-10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons in their season opener, the former Buckeye has my vote. His mobility and poise made all the difference Sunday afternoon.

Fields protected the ball, and his composure under pressure allowed the Steelers to win the time-of-possession battle. His 57 rushing yards on designed running plays provided an extra layer to the offense that proved challenging for the defense to contain.

A large part of Week 1's success is due to the play-calling of offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Smith strategically employed designed runs for the QB, recognizing his ability to create big plays with his legs. This resulted in multiple first downs, allowing Pittsburgh to extend drives and control the clock.

Mobility gave the offense a new dimension crucial to success in the NFL. Defensive speed is at a premium - so a quarterback who can move outside the pocket and make plays is invaluable.

Justin Fields has more to offer the Steelers than Russell Wilson

Mobility is an essential trait for quarterbacks in Arthur Smith’s offense. His scheme requires precision passing, and the ability to escape pressure - creating opportunities on the run. This ability becomes vital when looking at the alternative: Russell Wilson.

Wilson is still recovering from a lingering calf injury, which could significantly hamper his mobility. While veteran experience and leadership are assets, his lack of mobility due to the injury would limit his effectiveness. Without the ability to make plays outside the pocket, Wilson becomes a liability, and defenses will zero in on his limitations.

Rushing Wilson back into action doesn't make sense when Fields is perfectly capable of leading the offense. The Steelers need a quarterback who can execute passing and running plays, especially with the designed runs that have become central to Smith’s game plan.

Fields has already proven he can do just that. It is apparent Wilson is the better quarterback when healthy, but is he ready to take the reigns?

So the question remains: how much of a difference can an injured Russell Wilson make? Right now, Justin Fields is the best option to start for the Steelers until Wilson is 100 percent healthy and can fully contribute.

The fourth-year quarterback is determined to succeed. Why not give Fields a chance until Wilson returns to full health? For now, the focus should remain on Justin Fields as he continues to grow and lead the team effectively.
