Steelers schedule pre-draft visit with freakish cornerback prospect
By Tommy Jaggi
Another day, another pre-draft visit scheduled for the Pittsburgh Steelers. After recently adding TCU guard Steve Avila as a top-30 visit, Ryan Fowler of The Draft Network confirms that Kansas State cornerback, Julius Brents, is scheduled to have an in-house meeting with the Steelers.
This one is sure to get a lot of fans excited. After the Steelers essentially ignored Deonte Banks at Maryland's Pro Day, Pittsburgh is convincing us that they aren't content with their current cornerback situation.
Brents is a very exciting football player. After raking in 4 interceptions during his senior season, Brents was the most impressive cornerback in one-on-one drills during Senior Bowl week. From there, Brents showed off his elite traits at the NFL Combine with an 11'6'' broad jump, 41.5'' vertical, and blazing 6.63 3-cone drill.
All of these numbers combined to make Julius Brents a 98th percentile athlete at the cornerback position, according to his Relative Athletic Score. Combine these elite athletic traits with the fact that he is 6'2 5/8'' with insane 34'' arms, and you have one of the most intriguing CB prospects to come out in recent years.
In many ways, Brents is just as freakish as 2022 rookie standout Tariq Woolen -- who is coming off a fantastic first season with the Seattle Seahawks. Though the Steelers haven't necessarily made cornerback a priority during Mike Tomlin's and Omar Khan's Pro Day trail, it's a position they could certainly target early in the draft.
Brents is the latest day-two CB to schedule visit with Steelers
It's true that Pittsburgh's brass has skipped out on the pro days of Christian Gonzalez and Devon Witherspoon so far, but it looks like there could be a strong chance they could be targeting a CB early in the second round.
This is where most are projecting Julius Brents to go. Over the past few months, Brents has been one of the most rapidly-rising players in the 2023 NFL Draft thanks to unmatched size, length, and physical traits. But he isn't the only CB the Steelers have their eyes on.
Prior to scheduling a top-30 visit with Brents, the Steelers have already scheduled pre-draft visits with players like Mississippi State's Emmanuel Forbes, Georgia's Kelee Ringo, and Miami's Tyrique Stevenson. They also had a pro-day dinner meeting with Iowa's Riley Moss.
For some reason or another, it seems like the Pittsburgh Steelers are much more interested in targeting a cornerback on day two of the draft at this point in time; rather than selecting one with the 17th overall pick. Obviously, there's still time for this to change. Stay with us as we continue to keep tabs on Pittsburgh's moves and track their interest in the weeks leading up to the 2023 NFL Draft.
