Top 10 options to replace Mike Sullivan as the Steelers Quarterbacks Coach
It was just thrown out there that Mike Sullivan will be getting a job elsewhere next season. He did a respectable job for the Steelers, but a new offensive coordinator normally means a new, or mostly different staff. The new coordinator will want to bring in his guys unless Mike Tomlin steps in and decides to make them keep certain coaches for now. There are plenty of quality candidates to take over this position.
Sullivan has been ok as a quarterbacks coach in Pittsburgh, but the lack of development of Kenny Pickett will always be his judgment. Pickett has not been able to get better, so maybe a new option can get more out of the young quarterback. Some interesting options are looking for employment that could make sense as the new quarterback's coach of the Steelers. Some might be bigger names than you are expecting.
Pep Hamilton could be an interesting choice to replace Mike Sullivan
One name currently rumored for the offensive coordinator opening is none other than Pep Hamilton. He has a lot of quarterback coaching experience and has helped young quarterbacks take their respective games to the next level before. He also has a lot of offensive coordinator experience in the NFL and would be a worthy candidate to replace Matt Canada.
Many want someone else to become the next coordinator, and for good reason. Hamilton could be someone who could get a look as the next quarterbacks coach in Pittsburgh. The main issue would be whether Hamilton would want that type of job or not. He has been out of work for a couple of years now in the coaching ranks, so maybe he will be willing to take a job like this. Seems like something more suitable for all parties involved.
J.T. Barrett had a short stint with the Steelers and is a rising young coach
Throwing out another idea out there with J.T. Barrett. The famous Ohio State quarterback is now in the coaching ranks of the NFL. He has only been out of playing football for a couple of years and is now with the Detroit Lions. He is still extremely young, but he knows what it is like to play the quarterback position first-hand.
This would surely be a surprise hire, but it is hard to look past what's in the water in Detroit currently. Pittsburgh would be taking a risk by hiring a young coach, but sometimes that is what gets the most out of your team. Right now, Barrett is the assistant quarterbacks coach of the Lions and he would seemingly join the Steelers with a promotion. Both he and Pittsburgh were familiar with one another when he was with them from 2019 to 2020.
