The Pittsburgh Steelers are firmly into training camp with their ongoing issues at the receiver position still in full effect. They have failed to find an upgrade to pair with DK Metcalf, but that doesn't mean the sky is falling. Expect some of the younger players on the roster to get a chance this preseason to show they are worthy of an extended look at a bigger role. It is time for them to sink or swim for this team.

Keep an eye on Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson throughout the rest of training camp.

If either produces a strong preseason process, it might eliminate the Steelers' resounding need at the position. The initial depth chart is always intriguing, but the receiver position is likely to create mixed reactions. Mike Tomlin will blend young and old playmakers to rile up competition under the summer heat.

Pittsburgh Steelers face backlash if they fail to upgrade their depth chart at receiver

Steelers outside receiver spot is a one-man show

Metcalf remains the star player for the position going into training camp.

No one rivals his experience and skill set as an outside receiver. Wilson must stay healthy and build off a strong start to offseason workouts. He was a third-round pick by the Steelers in the 2024 NFL Draft, which means his chances of making the roster remain high. If he fails to carve out a significant role on offense on the outside or in the slot, many will be concerned about his future.

Fans might not be thrilled with Austin being the second receiver to pair with Metcalf, but that seems to be the plan so far. Receivers coach Zach Azzanni mentioned at mini camp that he thinks Austin has a terrific chance to be the second target on offense, and that's how it's played out thus far. Expect him to be the second receiver to start the season, barring a big leap from Wilson.

When it comes to the bottom of the depth chart, Brandon Johnson is someone who could work his way into the roster conversation. He is a solid veteran piece who has proven to be a quality depth option throughout his career. Lance McCutcheon doesn't have a clear path to make the team, but he can hopefully show enough to make it hard on the coaching staff during cuts.

Ben Skowronek is back, and his chances of making the roster remain high if he can keep up his blocking prowess and play well on special teams. Roc Taylor has an uphill battle to make the club this preseason, but he has started to make noise at camp as of late.

Steelers slot receiver position is wide open

The slot receiver spot could see different outcomes during the preseason process.

Robert Woods has played the position for a long time, and the veteran receiver will get the benefit of the doubt from a coaching staff that values experience. He could become a reliable player that Aaron Rodgers leans on if the young players fail to impress. Other players who aren't listed in the slot could always slide into that role if they fail on the outside.

Wilson would be a solid fit in the slot, and he has been working there plenty in camp. Scotty Miller can play inside and outside, but his role within the team seems shaky at best. Ke'Shawn Williams is an undrafted free agent who has almost no shot at making the roster, but he has stuck around thus far. He will have to jump over people on the depth chart to even have a slight chance at making it.
