Raiders' devastating injury news all but giftwraps a win for Steelers in Week 6
By Tommy Jaggi
Pittsburgh's injury luck has been about as bad as any team in the league entering Week 6. In their first five games of the season, the Steelers lost their first-round pick Troy Fautanu for the year, starting guard James Daniels to an Achilles injury, two of their top three running backs to soft tissue injuries, and edge rushers Nick Herbig and Alex Highsmith with ailments.
So far, it's been a struggle to overcome a multitude of injuries, and the Steelers have dropped two straight games. But they aren't the only team that has is bad right now.
Pittsburgh is set to play the Raiders on the road in Las Vegas this week. Traveling out west is something many Steelers fans have been fearful of, as we've seen this team under Mike Tomlin struggle with pedestrian opponents when traveling.
While we can't expect the Steelers to blow anybody out with the way their offense is playing, they are very fortunate to catch the Raiders in their current state.
On October 8, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that star defensive tackle Christian Wilkins is out indefinitely after undergoing surgery to repair a Jones Fracture he suffered in Week 5. Less than 24 hours later, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported that the Raiders will be without All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams this week as he remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.
Steelers catch a massive break in wake of their own injuries
Overcoming the loss of Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig won't be easy -- especially with backup edge rusher DeMarvin Leal also out this week. But as bad as the Steelers have it right now, it could be worse.
The Raiders aren't the most talented team, to begin with, so losing two of their top three players will be a devastating blow to this team in Week 6. Wilkins has been performing like one of the best interior defenders in the NFL in the first five weeks of the season while recording at least a half-sack in each of his last three games.
Meanwhile, many speculate that Adams is healthy enough to play; however, the disgruntled wide receiver is unhappy with his situation in Las Vegas and wants to avoid a potential injury if he's dealt before the trade deadline. The Steelers are one of several teams involved in trade rumors for Adams.
Though the Steelers will still have to deal with the likes of punishing pass rusher Maxx Crosby and dynamic tight end Brock Bowers, the Raiders' roster lacks talent and depth. These are things that are hard to overcome when two of their best players won't be suiting up against Pittsburgh in Week 6.
The Steelers are stuck in a rut, but the latest Raider injury news could help Pittsburgh snap this mini-losing streak. Don't take them lightly; just take care of business.
