Many teams try to get better in a hurry, and that often leads to struggling franchises spending heavily as free agency opens. Although the Pittsburgh Steelers have become more aggressive in pursuing free agents in recent years, they still avoid reckless spending. General Manager Omar Khan was active during the first wave of free agency, collecting smart contracts and pulling off a splash trade.
While each deal could create challenges in the future, all of them look like strong additions on paper.
The Steelers found creative ways to address several pressing needs and reduce the pressure on the upcoming NFL Draft. Don’t be surprised if Khan continues to add pieces in free agency, as a few roster vacancies still remain. Overall, the Steelers have kicked off their offseason spending with an impressive start.
Ranking every early Pittsburgh Steelers free agent signing and trade after a busy first wave
Rico Dowdle, RB
The news came late on the first day of free agency, but Pittsburgh secured its replacement for Kenneth Gainwell. Although several running backs were available, the team prioritized familiarity. Rico Dowdle is coming off an impressive season with the Carolina Panthers, where he played a major role in their offense. At the same time, he’s no stranger to working in a backfield duo.
Dowdle previously worked with Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy during their four seasons together with the Dallas Cowboys, making his signing an unexpected but pleasant surprise. He has been a reliable contributor throughout his NFL career, especially over the past two seasons. Dowdle excels as a runner between the tackles and also brings a measure of reliability as a pass catcher.
Jamel Dean, CB
It was surprising to see Khan pursue some of the top names available this offseason.
Jamel Dean was a target few expected the Steelers to pursue in free agency, but that assumption quickly proved wrong. With Joey Porter Jr.’s contract extension approaching, many believed the team would avoid paying for another starting-caliber cornerback, yet they chose to invest anyway.
Dean was one of the top players at his position this past season. He excels in press coverage and is one of the better tackling cornerbacks. His biggest concerns are tied to his age, as Dean will turn 30 in October. The veteran has also struggled to stay healthy, which could create issues. Even so, this is a strong contract for the Steelers, coming at a fair price for a clear upgrade to the secondary.
Michael Pittman Jr., WR
He was not technically a free agent signing, but Michael Pittman Jr. is about as close as it gets. Similar to the DK Metcalf trade last offseason, Pittsburgh acquired a proven receiver to help elevate the offense. The former Colts playmaker has put together a strong NFL career, and at only 28 years old, he should have plenty of productive years ahead of him.
The Steelers acquired the receiver in a low‑cost trade, sending their sixth‑round pick to the Colts in exchange for a seventh‑round selection and Pittman.
It was an excellent value move, especially considering Indianapolis had already re‑signed Alec Pierce to a massive contract extension at the start of free agency. Although the Pittman addition ranks last on this list, it still represents smart business by Khan as he continues working to address the team’s lingering issues.
