As training camp is about to heat up for the Pittsburgh Steelers, don't be surprised if injuries and other issues arise. The roster has a long way to go before it's set, but there are players who are already locks to make the team. Some of those individuals will be vital when it comes to the team's success this season.

If the Steelers want to compete this year, they cannot afford to lose these players.

It'll be another campaign led by an aging group of players with some young pieces sprinkled into the roster makeup. Some players will be more crucial to the club's success this season than others, and any time that they miss could ruin their chances. Here are the five players that the Pittsburgh Steelers will rely on most in 2026.

Pittsburgh Steelers vital roster players for this season going into training camp are clear

Nothing would have a more immediate impact on the Steelers upcoming season than an injury to Aaron Rodgers.

The veteran gunslinger will be the starter after an up-and-down campaign last year. He is looking for another shot at playoff success, and the hope is that teaming back up with Mike McCarthy will get that goal accomplished. The Steelers cannot afford to see Rodgers play the same brand of football he did a year ago; that much is clear.

We all know what happened when Aaron Rodgers lasted through the New York Jets training camp only to suffer a season-ending injury early during his first regular season game there. Pittsburgh cannot afford to suffer that same fate, as the quarterbacks behind him on the roster won't be able to take matters into their own hands. If Rodgers were to miss more than a game or two, the season would be lost.

He has been the heart and soul for the Steelers for a decade now, and Cam Heyward doesn't seem to be slowing down. Ideally, one of the younger defensive linemen like Derrick Harmon and or Keeanu Benton will step up sooner rather than later. For now, Heyward remains the unquestioned leader of the locker room and one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL despite his advanced age.

Losing a pillar to your defensive front is terrible enough, but struggling to replace his leadership would only inflate the problem. Without a young, proven replacement behind him going into training camp, losing Heyward would be a disaster. If the Steelers were to lose the veteran for an extended period of time, expect the team to struggle in the locker room and defending against the opposition.

Expect there to potentially be some drama between the Steelers and Joey Porter Jr. at training camp.

He is still waiting for a contract extension, and it will likely come at a premium price. They will be banking on his upside, and Porter Jr. has shown promise despite some penalty concerns. The longer these negotiations linger, the more annoying his potential "hold-in" could become.

Although Pittsburgh added pieces this offseason to its cornerback group, Porter Jr. continues to be their top player at the position. Any possibility of him missing time due to contract issues or injury would be a massive problem for the defense to overcome. He remains a young player on the rise, and the Steelers have shown their clear intentions of keeping him around.

We all saw what happened after DK Metcalf got suspended late last season. It created a stagnant offense without any reliable weapons at wide receiver. Metcalf remains their top receiver heading into training camp, even with multiple new names added to the mix this offseason.

Missing a game or two this time around wouldn't be the end of the world, but it wouldn't be easy either.

Bringing in Michael Pittman Jr. and Germie Bernard should help get the Steelers through any absences from Metcalf this season, but he is still the top player at the position by a mile. Without his speed and YAC ability, the offense would lose one of its few ways of creating explosives.

Placing a kicker on the top five list of roster players who the Steelers can't afford to lose this season is bold, but it's hard to argue against. Chris Boswell has proven over the past five years or so that he is the most reliable point getter for the team. The Steelers rely on Boswell to kick them into contention on a weekly basis.

He just re-signed on a massive contract extension, but the kicker position is normally one of the most replaceable positions in football. With that said, Boswell is in another stratosphere when it comes to his talent level among his peers. His ability to make kicks in some of the toughest environments is astounding. Losing him would sink the offense to new lows.
