The Pittsburgh Steelers have had an energetic start to training camp. With non-stop news and updates, it has been a welcome addition to the slowest part of the NFL calendar year.
One of the early winners of camp was Roman Wilson.
The former third-round pick entered training camp on rocky ground. His first two years on the team were lackluster. His rookie season was cut short by injury, and he was effectively benched midway through year two.
With a revamped receiver room in Pittsburgh, Wilson’s spot on the team was far from secure. Without much special teams value, there was a clear problem with how Wilson would see the field if he made the team. Now, the question may be: how do the Steelers keep him off the field?

While everyone assumed Germie Bernard would waltz in and claim the third receiver role, Wilson isn’t going down without a fight. A lot is on the line entering his third NFL season, and he is showing up.
It goes beyond just the positive plays right now as well. Wilson is constantly getting targets. That means he is finding ways to separate, get open, and quarterbacks are starting to depend on that.
The Steelers haven’t had a receiver win with just their route running in years. The hope is that Bernard can eventually get to that point, but Wilson may already be leapfrogging him.
Also important is that Wilson is starting to stack good days. He has been all over the news in camp so far, but he was also making positive waves in OTA’s.
While this battle is far from over, and Wilson will have competition hot on his heels for the rest of the summer, the early returns have been positive. It could end up saving Wilson’s Steelers career after it looked like it was circling the drain.
Time will tell if these positive updates end up amounting to anything. Wilson could end up fading once the pads come on and during the preseason.
The point is, he isn’t going down without a fight. If both he and Bernard prove to be ready to contribute, the Steelers could have their deepest receiver room in some time. There is still a long road before he is given the third receiver role, but by all accounts, Wilson is doing everything right now.
