Roman Wilson's OTA absence just complicated the Steelers' WR picture

Roman Wilson’s reset with the Pittsburgh Steelers may have hit an early snag.

According to DK Sports’ Chris Halicke, Wilson wasn’t on the field during the media viewing window at Thursday’s OTA at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. Attendance was similar to the rest of the voluntary spring schedule, with several veterans absent, but Wilson’s absence stood out because of his position in Pittsburgh’s wide receiver room.

“Roman Wilson was missing among the wide receivers during the window open to the media,” Halicke reported. “He was not on the field and not participating in any of the drills while the media was permitted to watch practice.”

Most of Steelers Nation has written him off anyway, but for those who haven’t -- it’s June, so there’s no reason to panic. Halicke noted that the reason for his absence is unknown.

OTA absences can mean a lot of things, and outsiders don’t have the full story. It could be something as simple as an illness, a minor issue, or a planned day away from the field.

But Wilson isn’t in the same spot as a locked-in veteran who can miss a spring practice without anyone noticing.

Roman Wilson can’t afford to fade into the background with Pittsburgh Steelers

Wilson arrived in Pittsburgh as a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, but his Steelers career hasn’t really gotten started. His rookie and sophomore seasons were derailed by injuries, and what he did do in 2025 certainly wasn't enough to settle his place in the offense.

That’s what makes this offseason so critical for the soon 24-year-old.

The Steelers have a new head coach in Mike McCarthy, the franchise’s first offensive-minded head coach since Chuck Noll. That should give Wilson a real chance to reset, especially if the staff sees him as more than just a traditional slot receiver.

But a fresh start only helps if Wilson can stay on the field and stack good days.

The Steelers’ wide receiver room also isn’t necessarily hurting for young talent. Pittsburgh added rookies Germie Bernard and Eli Heidenreich in April, and both enter the summer with a chance to push for roles. That’s bad news for any receiver still trying to prove he belongs.

Wilson doesn’t need to win a job in June, but he does need momentum. Every missed practice is a missed chance to build trust with a new staff, sharpen timing with the quarterbacks, and remind the Steelers why they drafted him.

There’s still time for Wilson to change the conversation. But with August cuts eventually coming, he can’t afford to fade into the background or turn into another offseason where the Steelers are left waiting for him to show up.
