The Pittsburgh Steelers were shorthanded against the Ravens and in need of a spark. On Baltimore's second drive of the game, the Ravens' offense made it look easy as they marched down the field for a six-play, 41-yard touchdown drive.
That's when Russell Wilson answered back. As ugly as Pittsburgh's first possession looked, their second was just the opposite. Wilson led a 10-play, 73-yard touchdown drive to knot the game at seven a piece.
Then came Pittsburgh's big opportunity to turn the tides and suck the life out of the crowd. After holding the Ravens to just 12 yards on their third possession, the Steelers quickly marched down the field for 52 yards on five plays.
That's when Russell Wilson got a bit to brave for his britches.
With space to roam in the red zone, Wilson took off with the football down the middle of the field, but when he got near the goal line, the 36-year quarterback decided to make an endzone instead of sliding and getting a fresh set of downs just yards away. Wilson was hit hard on the play and coughed up the football.
The ball was recovered by the Ravens, who quickly took the ball 96 yards in the other direction for a score —obliterating all momentum the Steelers once had.
Steelers' aggressiveness cost them dearly
We never want to fault Russell Wilson or the team for being overly aggressive. But in this case, the results of the play had dire consequences. Instead of scoring a touchdown, this ended up being a 14-point swing in favor of Baltimore.
This sucker punch to the Steelers sucked the life out of the team while giving their arch-rival all the momentum. This was the third time in the first half that the football had hit the turn and the Steelers were unable to get their hands on it.
Mike Tomlin's team can clinch the AFC North with a win in Baltimore, but the Steelers aren't going to do that with game-altering plays going against them. Let's hope they can find a way to overcome this disastrous sequence of events.
