The Pittsburgh Steelers needed a spark on offense, but this might not have been the best way to go about it. Late in the second quarter, Mike Tomlin's team trailed 6-7 and points were hard to come by. That's when Arthur Smith tried to pull a rabbit out of his hat.

With just over six minutes remaining before the half, the Steelers tried to catch the Raiders napping on a 2nd and 10 play. Justin Fields pitched the ball to Jaylen Warren who tossed it to tight end Pat Freiermuth before Freiermuth tossed it back to Fields.

The problem was this play took far too long to develop. It resulted in Divine Deablo dropping Fields for a sack that resulted in a 13-yard loss.

There's nothing wrong with getting creative, but this was a comically poorly executed play that never stood a chance from the gate. Deablo read this the whole time.

The funny part about this is that the Steelers were finally starting to move the ball before Smith dusted off his playbook for this one. Unfortunately, this sack took Pittsburgh well out of field goal range and Fields couldn't do a thing about it the next play on 3rd and 23.

Steelers are outthinking themselves

Everything we saw from the offense in the first half was a catastrophe. The first five drives for the Steelers resulted in two field goals, two punts, and an interception in the red zone. Fortunately, the pick was called back due to a roughing the quarterback call. Justin Fields capped off the only touchdown of the first half for the Steelers with just 34 until halftime.

This feels like rock bottom, and there's nowhere to go but up from here. It's clear the Steelers are outthinking themselves, and their botched trick play pretty much sums up their abysmal offense through the first six weeks of the season.

This isn't the bounce-back performance from the offense everyone wanted to see.
