This is not a good fit.

The Miami Dolphins began to clear house this week as they cut numerous starters as they prepare for a rebuild. Pittsburgh Steelers fans were quick to notice, as they are now clamoring for recently released receiver Tyreek Hill.

Signing him would be nothing short of a disaster for the Steelers.

At one point in time, Hill was a true top receiver in the league. His speed made him an elite deep threat, and his ability after the catch was electric. This made him potent with the Chiefs and dynamic in Miami.

When you look at his strengths, though, it feels like his potential fit with the Steelers isn’t there. Add in numerous off-the-field issues, and Hill needs to be avoided at all costs this offseason.

The Pittsburgh Steelers need to pass on Tyreek Hill this year

Despite a lot of success with the Dolphins, the past two seasons have been bad for the veteran. He only played in four games last year and failed to record 1,000 receiving yards in 2024.

A huge part of that reason was the regression of Tua Tagovailoa. He failed to push the ball down the field, and it impacted a major strength of Hill’s game.

That being said, Hill is also about to be 32 years old. One of the first things you lose to age is speed, so one has to question how effective Hill can still be. I’m not saying his regression is all his fault, but the age at which this is happening is certainly a cause for concern.

That doesn’t mean he will come in for cheap, though. He was playing on a $30 million per year contract with the Dolphins, and I struggle to see him accepting much less. For a Steelers team that isn’t poised to be massive spenders, this could be a hard contract to stomach.

Finally, and most concerning, the Steelers are widely expected to welcome Aaron Rodgers back for another season. He currently thrives on quick and short passes. Once again, that takes away a massive element of Hill’s game.

That doesn’t mean he couldn’t be successful; he can still win short with the ball in his hands, but not having a competent deep ball and paying Hill on a big deal is nonsensical.

While Hill provides the name value that fans want in the receiver room, his fit with the team is questionable at best. There are better free agent receiver fits, and Hill would be wise to go to a team that still has a competent deep passing game.
