Davante Adams has officially been traded, but to the dismay of many Steelers fans, the talented veteran is heading to New York instead of Pittsburgh. While there was a lot of hope that the team would bring in Adams to compliment this offense, they miss out on yet another receiver option and will continue to field their current crop of pass catchers.

I, for one, am not dismayed at the news. While I don’t think the value was horrible, a third-round pick that could turn into a second-round pick, that is rich compensation for a Steelers team that isn’t throwing much. Like it or not, I struggle to view this team as a legitimate contender, so giving that up for Adams, a likely one-year rental given his contract, never made sense to me.

His landing with the Jets does open the door for a new trade that this team needs to explore. While I was against both the Adams and Aiyuk trade rumors, it was much more due to what the team would have to give up (early picks and/or a huge new contract). This team has a need at receiver, but they don’t need an elite name to compliment George Pickens.

The Jets now have an overly crowded receiver room. Garrett Wilson is still the starter while Aaron Rodgers has rekindled his connection with Alan Lazard. Neither will be moved on a Jets team clearly trying to win now. Mike Williams, on the other hand, has to be on the Steelers radar.

Why Williams is the perfect Steelers target

The Steelers interest in Williams goes back to this offseason. Following his release from the Chargers, Pittsburgh was set to meet with him and potentially sign him. That never materialized, as he met with the Jets first and never left without a deal. His stint in New York has been lackluster though, and he is clearly the fourth receiver option on the depth chart.

I doubt he wants to stay there given the new layout of the team. Add in Rodgers's remarks about him after the Bills game and it seems like he wouldn’t care if he was off the team. This is becoming the perfect storm as to a potential cheap veteran receiver option the Steelers need to target.

No Williams hasn’t looked elite with the Jets, and odds are he would turn into a dynamo with the Steelers, but he could take some pressure off Pickens and provide an upgrade on the outside over Van Jefferson. The Jets would also eat most of his contract because of how they structured it, leaving the Steelers with a cheap cap hit that will only increase if his incentives are met, which doesn’t seem likely as of this writing.

What would the Jets want for him? Given the fact that they are eating most of his cap hit no matter what they won’t just give him away. I think a pick swap could make a lot of sense, let’s say the Steelers send a fifth and get Williams and a sixth or seventh back. His value is minimal right now, so it shouldn’t cost much.

Next. The time is now: Steelers must make a quarterback choice this week. The time is now: Steelers must make a quarterback choice this week. dark

While his name is bigger than his production, getting Williams at that price makes too much sense not to do. There would certainly be a learning curve, as he would be on his second offensive scheme of the season, and the instant results may not be great, but once he finds his footing he would be a perfect second receiver in this room. If the price is right, the Steelers need to call the Jets about Williams today.
