The Pittsburgh Steelers made a move that many expected them to make following the DK Metcalf trade, as they traded away wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys for a trade package highlighted by a third-round pick in 2026 coming over to the black and gold.
Pickens' trade does leave quite a big hole in a wide receiver room that was suspect before the move. The Steelers may need to bring in one more veteran player, and the perfect low-cost option may have presented itself.
After a strong start to his career with the Buffalo Bills, Gabe Davis decided to return to his native Florida by signing a three-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, after drafting Brian Thomas Jr. in 2024 and adding Travis Hunter this year, new coach Liam Coen decided to release him.
Davis' stock may have fallen this year, but he still has plenty of gas left in the tank. The Steelers could be the perfect venue for him to revitalize his career and play a part on a team that is trying to sneak back into the postseason picture.
Steelers need to sign Gabe Davis after George Pickens trade
Davis had a role as a No. 2 wide receiver in Buffalo, but the Jaguars invested in him with the thought he could be a featured option in their passing game. It didn't take long for Thomas to prove he was the superior player, and Davis was immediately sent down the depth chart.
If the Steelers are going to get Rodgers in the mix as their quarterback, they need to take advantage of his downfield arm. Both Metcalf and Davis are quality deep threats, which could help replace the vertical aspect of their offense they lost when Pickens was officially sent packing.
Davis' history of performing well in the postseason is more than just being on the receiving end of a few Josh Allen moonballs, That type of performance in the clutch is rare to find in complementary receivers like this, all of which should get the Steelers more enticed to bring him into the fold.
Any offense with Calvin Austin III as WR2 is doomed to failure with or without Rodgers under center. Of the options still out there on the free agent market, Davis is the best combination of skill, upside, and value that is still available. Pittsburgh must act fast to sign him.
