Steelers shock everyone and pull off another trade before the deadline
Something crazy is going on within the Pittsburgh Steelers organization after they just added another piece to their roster. First, they made a move by adding Mike Williams before the trade deadline, but many thought that would be it.
Now, Pittsburgh just made another trade that no one was expecting. They added Preston Smith from the Green Bay Packers to receive a major boost to their defensive front.
Adding an edge rusher is something many didn't think the black and gold needed. Upon closer investigation, it makes a ton of sense. They wanted four quality linebackers on the edges, but they were unable to accomplish that this past offseason.
They almost did when Markus Golden returned, but he retired quickly after announcing his comeback. Adding Smith gives them that depth.
With the history of T.J. Watt injuries and both Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig going down with injuries already this season, the Steelers needed some extra security.
Their defense runs on how aggressive their pass rushers can play. Not only do they have someone who could start in case of mounting injuries, but they also have a situational pass rusher to join their loaded pass-rushing core.
Steelers have been highly active before the trade deadline
Some might be wondering why the Packers were willing to move a keystone of their defense before the deadline. Smith has been slowing down this season compared to his past campaigns.
Another big factor for Green Bay was wanting some of their younger guys behind him to get more snaps. This move allows Smith to remain on a contender and have a shot at racking up sacks.

Right now, Smith has only two and a half sacks through nine games this season. He might be starting to slow down, but you cannot deny the level of experience that he brings with him.
He is a quality piece that Mike Tomlin and the Steelers defense love to have around. The fit makes a ton of sense and the ability for him to start when needed brought this trade to life.
He is under contract through the 2026 season, so that could become a concern down the line. It will be interesting to see what the black and gold are willing to do so Smith can get onto the field and make an impact. Even though he might be getting older, that does not mean he cannot produce some quality snaps. Sometimes less is more and that is what Pittsburgh is banking on.
When you look at this trade, the Steelers only gave up a seventh-round pick to acquire Smith. That is pennies on the dollar, especially when they wanted to secure their edge position.
Without quality outside linebackers, the Steelers defense is lifeless. They knew this and felt obligated to introduce Smith to the team with this trade. A buy low veteran piece to inflate the Steelers' chances of winning.
