The Steelers could look to take advantage of brewing QB questions in Houston

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ search for a long-term answer at quarterback may eventually require them to look beyond the NFL draft, given their typical 20-something spot in the yearly event. Proven starters rarely become available, but contract disputes, playoff disappointments, and changing expectations can create opportunities that didn’t exist a year earlier.

That proven starter could be Houston Texans’ QB C.J. Stroud. Of course, any Steelers trade for Stroud belongs in the 2027 conversation as there’s no reason to move the 2023 No. 2 pick now, but the coming season could create a contract decision.

Stroud is entering the fourth year of his four-year, $36.3 million rookie deal without an extension. His brilliant debut set a demanding standard, and two uneven seasons have left the Texans wondering whether that version can return.

C.J. Stroud could become the Pittsburgh Steelers’ best buy-low quarterback option

“If things don't go well in Houston this year, okay, I do think we start to get into the territory of: do the Texans listen to offers for C.J. Stroud?” Still Curtain co-editor Shayne Kubas wondered on the recent “Still Curtain” podcast.

Houston’s championship-caliber defense puts more pressure on Stroud. He produced 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns, and five interceptions as a rookie. Across 2024 and 2025, he totaled 6,768 yards, 39 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. Those numbers don’t automatically justify a massive extension for a team chasing a Super Bowl.

Pittsburgh’s appeal would begin up front. The Steelers rank 21st in Sharp Football Analysis’ offensive line rankings, while Houston sits 31st. Pittsburgh’s young group could look much stronger by 2027, giving Stroud a cleaner environment than the one behind his recent problems.

“If you were to bring him to Pittsburgh, by that point, we assume, or we hope, the offensive line should be in a very, very good place,” Kubas said.

Stroud is a pocket passer who thrives off play-action and deeper concepts, so interior pressure can disrupt his timing and force hurried decisions. A sturdier Steelers line could help restore the confidence and rhythm that powered his rookie breakout.

Kubas also believes Pittsburgh could “end up getting a little bit of a discount on a franchise-level quarterback because of the questions with him.”

That discount would only exist if Stroud’s value dips while Houston approaches a contract crossroads. The Steelers would also need their line to develop and their quarterback plan to remain unsettled. Those conditions give this hypothetical more substance than the usual star-quarterback fantasy.

If Houston decides Stroud is keeping an elite roster from reaching the Super Bowl, Pittsburgh could offer a reset without asking him to rescue another broken offense. By 2027, that could make Stroud the rare available quarterback whose upside exceeds his trade price.
