Draft Scoop

The ESPN NFL Draft Insiders have put together lists of each teams’ biggest needs, top targets and draft day predictions. When it comes to the Steelers there’s no secret that the biggest need is the secondary and outside linebacker. The possible targets include Wake Forest CB Kevin Johnson, Alabama safety Landon Collins and Missouri DE Markus Golden.

The predictions include the idea that the Steelers will finally select a cornerback earlier than the third round for the first time since 2005. The last cornerback selected in the first two days was Bryant McFadden.

It’s Thomas’ time

Last summer, Shamarko Thomas traveled to Southern California to train with Troy Polamalu. Bob Labriola explains how we realize now how much of a passing of the torch that trip turned out to be for Thomas now that Polamalu has retired.

Thomas came out of Syracuse two years ago as a hard-hitting safety that could also cover receivers but so far his career with the Steelers has been plagued with injuries and he hasn’t seen much of regular season action as of yet. Now is the time for Thomas to use that knowledge gained by training with Polamalu and get out on the field and make his mentor proud.

Schedule release date tentative

Mike Florio of PFT says that the NFL is in the process of narrowing down the date on which they will release the 2015 NFL Regular Season Schedule. The days could be anywhere between April 21st-23rd. The 2015NFL season will initially kick off on Thursday, September 10th in Foxboro with the Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots hosting either the Jets, Bills, Dolphins, Steelers, Eagles, Jaguars, Titans or Redskins.

There has been speculation that the Steelers could be a strong contender for the opener against New England but who knows with the suspensions of LeGarrette Blount and Le’Veon Bell plus the moves the Buffalo Bills made this offseason could make for an entertaining matchup against the Pats for prime time. We shall see.
