Pittsburgh Steelers 2014 Draft Behind The Scenes: Episode 3
By Kim Myers
The Pittsburgh Steelers are pulling back the curtain, so to speak, on their process of the draft. The Steelers website is showcasing a series of mini documentary-style videos giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at the draft process for the Steelers from the end of the 2013 season till Roger Goodell announces the pick.
In the third installment of the series we get to go inside of Draft Day at Steelers headquarters. We see how the big board comes together with the final grades given to each player and we’re also shown how heavily a players’ game film weighs in on their grade. No matter how they performed at the Combine or on their Pro Day, the Steelers make their grades on a player mostly on how he played the game.
You can watch the entire episode right here.
We get to see Dick LeBeau return to Ohio State for the Pro Day. LeBeau played for Ohio State back in the 1800s or so and always returns to the Pro Day each year to check out the potential draft picks.

Just prior to the draft, GM Kevin Colbert has the staff of coaches, assistants, and scouts put together mock drafts not all unlike those you’ll find here and all over the internet in the months leading up to the draft. The mock drafts include surprises and trades and all kinds of scenarios so that the team is prepared for whatever transpires the night of the draft.
You’ll see how the team of coaches and staff come together in the war room for the draft, including Chairman Dan Rooney. They watch the first round very closely knowing that every pick can affect how their pick at the 15th spot will go. They field calls from other teams looking to trade up to their spot but ultimately stay at 15. When the Chicago Bears selected CB Kyle Fuller right ahead of them they instantly know that they will be making Ryan Shazier a Pittsburgh Steeler.
It’s interesting to see that not only Mike Tomlin makes the call to Shazier, but Art Rooney II congratulates him as well as Dick LeBeau, who was obviously happy with not only a defensive player picked, but also at a defensive player out of Ohio State.
And with that Steeler Nation gets to see how the Steelers came to selecting Ryan Shazier out of Ohio State for their first pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
