Pittsburgh Steelers Sign 4th-Round Draft Pick

The Pittsburgh Steelers have come to terms on a four-year contract with their 4^th-round draft pick, Martavis Bryant. The team announced on Monday afternoon that they’ve signed the seventh player of their 2014 Draft class.

Martavis Bryant is a 6’4”, 211lb receiver out of Clemson where he played opposite Sammy Watkins, who went to the Buffalo Bills with the No. 4 pick in the draft. During his career at Clemson, Bryant recorded 61 receptions for 1,354 yards and 13 receiving touchdowns. He entered the draft instead of staying for his senior year.

Bryant joins a very young receiving corps, a group where Antonio Brown, who is entering his 5^th season, has the most seniority with the Steelers. The team lost two free agent wide receivers when Emmanuel Sanders and Jerricho Cotchery both signed elsewhere. In addition to drafting Bryant, the team signed Lance Moore and Darrius Heyward-Bey. He certainly fits the bill for a tall wide receiver the Steelers were looking for, although some had suggested they would target that position earlier in the draft than the 4^th round. Still, although Bryant will compete for a roster spot the Steelers wide receivers coach Richard Mann told Ed Bouchette early on that Bryant has the potential to start.

Most would have predicted that second-year receiver Markus Wheaton would be starting opposite Antonio Brown come Week 1 but after his rookie season was marred by injuries he’s almost starting at the same point Bryant is this offseason.
