Pre-camp defensive look
Bob Labriola now takes a look at the defensive side of the ball for the Steelers in his series of pre-training camp previews. The defense went through possibly the biggest transition it has in years this offseason with so many signings of defensive free agents along with the draft being defensive position-heavy. Labriola projects the starters on the defensive line to be Cam Heyward, Cam Thomas and Steve McLendon. It’s hard to say which group is going to be the most scrutinized or has the highest expectations of them.
Roethlisberger #6 in QB Ranking
ESPN’s Ron Jaworski ranked the NFL’s starting quarterbacks, based on game tape from 2013 and decided Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger was at No. 6 immediately behind Andrew Luck. You can put as much stock into Jaws’ rankings as you want, he did say last year that Colin Kaepernick could be one of the greatest quarterbacks ever. So, nothing worth getting excited or upset over here.
Steelers won the offseason
The Trib’s Alan Robinson thinks the Steelers are starting the season in a familiar position as favorites to win the AFC North. I wouldn’t go quite that far myself without seeing them match up against any other competition yet, but I’d agree with the sentiment Robinson quotes from NFL Network’s Brian Baldinger that the Steelers pretty much had the best offseason in the division.
"“Cleveland looks as dysfunctional as they always are…it’s just Cleveland. Cincinnati…I don’t know that you can replace a defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer (who is now the Minnesota Vikings coach) and the quarterback (Andy Dalton) was awful in the postseason. Baltimore, can they fix the offensive line?” – Brian Baldinger"
